River Pilots Drown The Wildcats In 58-16 Victory
\The River Pilots scored 38 second-quarter points en route to a 58-16 win over Paden City Sept. 25 at Martin Flannery Field in Hannibal.
After a scoreless first quarter, Lukas Isaly and Joey Flannery were involved in the first five scores as the Pilots built a 38-0 halftime advantage.
Isaly scored on runs of one an seven yards, while Flannery hit Craig Hupp for a 67-yard TD, and a six-yard TD to Isaly. Flannery added a six-yard TD scamper. Flannery and Isaly both ran in a two-point conversion as did Braden Whetsell.
Flannery again teamed with Isaly on a 46-yard TD pitch and catch in the third period as well as rushing for another late in the third.
Trenton Sprouse intercepted the ‘Cats Aaron Heasley for a 75-yard pick-six. River’s Grant Williams kicked four extra points.
The ‘Cats Deven Price broke up the shutout when he returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Luke Cooper caught the conversion pass from Heasley.
Paden City score the games finale touchdown with four tackles left on the clock when Cooper hauled in a 61-yard TD pass from Heasley, as well as the two-point conversion attempt to end the game.
The Pilots rushed for 298 yards and scored three touchdowns, with Isaly leading the way with 177 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries. Flannery tacked on 39 yards and a TD on five tries.
In addition, Hunter Dennis added 25 yards on three carries, while Dakota Smith and Whetsell added seven and 18 yards, respectively.
Hupp caught three passes for 71 yards and a touchdown, while Isaly hauled in two for 53 yards and a pair of scores. Drew Dietz and Peyton Vancamp each grabbed one TD ariel for 15 yards.
For the Wildcats, Heasley connected with Cooper six times for 117 yards and a score, while Hayden Hizer netted 13 yards rushing and 22 yards receiving. Price added 17 yards rushing and hauled in two passes for 17 yards. Zach Yeater rushed for one yard and caught two passes for nine yards.
Paden City accumulated only 13 total yards rushing on 11 tries, while moving the chains seven times. The visitors lost two fumbles and had an interception. Paden City lost 42 yards on six penalties to only 13 yards on two infractions for River.
Defensively, the ‘Cats Heasley and Rander Amos each recorded five tackles, while Logan Carroll and Bryce Blake each dropped four Pilot ball carriers.
For the Pilots, Cody Saksa led the way with nine stops, four of which were for loss of yardage, while Dennis brought down five. Dietz made four stops and recovered a fumble. Luke Matusik added a sack and a tackle for loss of yardage, before calling it a day early in the second half. Brok Miracle forced a fumble and Spouse made two tackles and added a pick-six.
“We started out deja-vu like last season against Paden City, but after we scored a couple touchdowns we started to wear them down and I felt a little better,” said River Head Coach Mike Flannery. “We just got in a groove and started to mix it up. Our line played very well for the second straight game.”
The Pilot returns to action Friday night against a very tough and physical Tyler Consolidated team, while the Wildcats head to Cameron to face the Dragons.
