Athletes of the Week
This weeks athlete of the week a pair of Blue Eagle athletes and a Silver Knight and River Pilot lineman each earned Player of the Week honors.
The Eagles Tyler Anderson scored twice on the ground and once threw the air. He managed 70-yards on only five carries, while hauling in two catches for 74-yards and a touchdown. He, as well as most of the Eagle starters, only played two periods in the 48-0 shutout over Greenbrier West.
Bailey Estep of Magnolia dished out 85 assists to help the Blue Eagles win matches with Hundred, Valley and River in only eight sets, while adding 11 points and making five kills.
Tyler Consolidated lineman Brandon Keys along with the Pilots Luke Matusik each had monster nights in their wins over Cameron and Monroe Central, respectively.
Keys made 12 tackles, caused a fumble and laid two rest a pair of Dragons runners for loss of yardage, while Matusik made 12 tackles with seven being solo stops. He also had a pair of quarterback sacks.
In Special Mention, Haylee Winkler of River scored 21 points, one ace and blocked two shots against Magnolia, and added 15 points, three service aces and a pair of blocks in a win over Linsly.
Special Mention also went to a River volleyball player Brissa Marshall. She handled 34 spikes from Magnolia with digs in a four-set match, while scoring three points. Marshall also had 35 digs in the win over Linsly.
Honorable Mention went to the Knights soccer player Daron Weekley. He scored two goals and assisted on another in a 3-1 win over John Marshall.
The Athlete of the Week is given to an area’s top athlete chosen by the sports staff at Wetzel Chronicle and the Tyler Star News. The winners can only claim athlete of the week once in that sport throughout the season.
Schools that will have a chance to win are Magnolia, Tyler Consolidated, Paden City, Hundred, Valley High School and River High School.
