Wildcats fall to Jackets and Maroon Knights
The Wildcats of Paden City played two varsity basketball games last week, taking the fall in both. The Green and White put together a good effort in their loss at home versus Williamstown, but were out manned by the Maroon Knights at Wheeling Central.
On Dec. 16, the ‘Cats played host to Williamstown, taking on the Yellow Jackets in what proved to be a good match-up between the two teams. Paden City fell behind in the first, but played a strong second period to catch up, 24-19.
The ‘Cats’ defense stepped up in the second half, allowing the Green to get within winning distance, but just short of the win itself, 57-52.
Putting points on the scoreboard for Paden City were senior Craig Allen and sophomore Luke Cooper, each totalling 13 points in the effort. Senior Kennedy Cain scored 10 points; Hayden Hizer had nine; Brandon Cross scored three; and Zach Heasley and Deven Price contributed two points apiece.
At Wheeling Central on Dec. 18, the Maroon Knights turned up the heat from outside the key to take the win, 88-63, handing the ‘Cats their second loss of the week.
Central got all the bang for their buck in the first period of play, putting 32 points on their side of the scoreboard while holding the Wildcats to 11. By halftime, the home team had lengthened their lead by 28 points to lead the game, 57-29.
Though Paden City came out with a different strategy in the second half and were able to sink some shots, Central maintained a healthy lead, and finally the win, 88-63.
Paden City’s Kennedy Cain led all shooters in the game with 34 points. Heasley also scored 11 points for the ‘Cats.
The Wildcats are scheduled to play again on Dec. 26 at Valley.
