Lady ‘Cats host Christmas tournament

The 2014 West Virginia High School girls basketball season started last week, with the Lady Knights of Tyler Consolidated getting out the box quickly with a game at home with Williamstown on Dec. 2. The Lady Wildcats of Paden City opened their season at home on Friday, hosting their own, “Lady Wildcat Christmas Classic” Tournament.

On Dec. 2, Tyler Consolidated fell to the Lady Yellow Jackets at home, 70-35, after finding themselves in the hole 28-16 after the first half.

Junior Kylie Martins stepped up to score 14 points by the Silver in the game. Also adding points to the total score were Vanessa Templeton, with five points; Hannah Casteel, three; Ariel Fish, three; Amanda Reynolds, four; and Katelyn Gogan, Breanna Yeater and Sydney Yoho, two points apiece.

Yoho brought down seven rebounds in the contest while Templeton had six and sophomore Aleah Black totaled five.

On Dec. 5 the Lady Knights took part in Paden City’s Lady Wildcat Christmas Classic Tournament in Paden City, facing off with Bridgeport in the first round, suffering their second loss of the short season, 55-30.

The Lady Knights had trouble adjusting, putting only six points on the score board in the first half of the game.

Scoring for the Silver were: Fish, seven points; Martin, six; Yoho, six; Templeton, five; Reynolds, three; Gogan two; and Black, one.

In the second game of the tournament, the Lady Wildcats fell to the Jills of Valley.

Cydney Blatt led all Wildcat scorers in the game with 13 points. Hannah Stanley scored 11; Taylor Cosper, four points; Kayla Hizer, three; Abbi Still, three; Chelsea Baker scored two points and Malaya Price, had two.

Tyler Consolidated achieved their first win of the season on Dec. 6 in the consolation game of the tournament, defeating the home town Wildcats, 50-21.

Templeton double/doubled in the game putting 10 points on the scoreboard for the Silver and pulling down 11 rebounds. Martin and Reynolds added nine points apiece; Fish scored eight and had seven rebounds; Madison West, four points; Kara Dalrymple, Black, Casteel, Gogan and Martha Shepherd added two points apiece in the contest. Gogan was credited with six steals and Fish, Reynolds and Martin had four each.

Blatt again led the Lady ‘Cats in the scoring department, putting nine points on their side of the scoreboard in the game. Hizer scored five; Cosper, four; Baker, two; and Aubrey Neff, one point.

Bridgeport went on to defeat Valley in the championship game to take the tournament title.

The Lady Wildcats will see action again on Dec. 11 at Wood County Christian and will host Hundred at home on Dec. 15.

The Lady Knights played host to Parkersburg Catholic on Dec. 9 and will travel to Linsly on Dec. 11.
