Lady Knight booters end season at sectionals
As every team will say, the season ended way too early for the Lady Knight girls soccer team at Tyler Consolidated. Head coach Matt Kinnard, assistant coach Megan Goddard, and the members of the team were just getting to where they wanted to be, when all at once, senior night was held and the team was playing in a Sectional match.
“Despite wins over John Marshall and Magnolia, our overall goals are down from last year. We were a greater offensive threat than in the past, and we were composed defensively most of the time. We can definitely see the progress the program is making from a soccer standpoint,” Kinnard said.
“The real story though,” he continued, “Comes in how the girls are representing Tyler with class on the field and are learning that the discipline required by the coaches must be transferred to the classroom as well. Making choices to avoid locations that will bring them and the team down, choosing to go to tutoring when they would rather be at practice, and standing up for team members as well as others off the team when needed show that they are becoming productive citizens who just happen to love soccer.
“The seniors who know I will not break the rules to win and took it upon themselves to form a team and play together while seeking guidance from other coaches will be sorely missed. Yet because of their actions and words the underclassmen are responding without my prodding and controlling.”
Last week the Lady Knights fell to Fairmont Senior, 6-0, in the Sectional contest to end their season. “We we down there and made the decision to move players up to score, knowing the risk. Ad while we finally had better chances, it also made us vulnerable and we lost 6 – 0.”
