Lady Knights and ‘Cats looking for court success
Just two weeks into the 2013/14 girls basketball season and the Tyler Consolidated Lady Knights and Paden City Lady Wildcats are looking hard for ways to win.
Games for the two teams are sporadic for now, but will increase in number as the season progresses.
Lady Knights
The Lady Knights started off the game with hot hands, outscoring the Lady Crusaders 21-12 and 13-9 in the first half to take the 34-21 lead. Though a battle of dominance ensued in the third quarter, and Parkersburg outscored the Knights 14-7 in the final stanza, the Black and Silver held on for the 59-52 win.
Only four players put the ball in the hoop for the Knights and two of them double-doubled for the evening with senior Sydney Reed totaling 28 points and 12 boards and fellow senior, Sophie Kinnard, adding 24 points and 11 rebounds. Reed also had four assists and a block, while Kinnard was credited with two blocks.
Sophomore Ariel Fish added five points and had nine rebounds, two assists and a steal and Vanessa Templeton scored two, brought down 10 rebounds and stole the ball twice. Madison West was credited with one rebound and two steals; Sydney Yoho, one rebound; Hannah Casteel, one assist; and Hillary Casteel, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.
In their next outing the Lady Knights went up against a very tough Linsly team at Tyler Consolidated on Dec. 12, and wound up with a nasty loss at the hands of the Cadets.
In fact, the only bright spot of the game for the home team occurred in the third period when senior Sophie Kinnard went to the line and connected on a sweet lob to raise her career point total to 1,000 at Tyler Consolidated. Officials stopped the game to hand the game ball over to Kinnard and after a few quick photos, she tossed the ball to a fan and averted her attention back to the game.
“I’m just glad it’s over,” she said. “It’s not about how many points I score, it’s about the game.”
Though the brief highlight eased the tension in the gym for a little while, the Ladies in Silver went on to face defeat for the second time this season.
The Tyler Consolidated Ladies traveled to Doddridge on Tuesday for a game with the Bulldogs and will face off with the Lumber Jills of Valley on Dec. 19. Once the Christmas break is over, the team will play at Magnolia on Dec. 28.
