Did you get your kicks in ’66?

Well, the Paden City High School football team did that autumn-literally and figuratively.

Led by a close-knit senior nucleus that included close friends Denny Price, Steve Fox, Neil Raper, and coach’s son Marty Healy, the Wildcats compiled a 9-0-1 record that fall.

The only thing resembling a blemish? A scoreless tie with arch-rival Sistersville.

That season is recalled in a new book, “From Paden City to the Panhandle: The Denny Price Story,” written by Adrian O’Connor, longtime editorial page editor of The Winchester (Va.) Star. O’Connor, serving as a Star sports stringer, covered Price’s Musselman High football teams during the Paden City native’s 40-year career, one that saw him notch more gridiron victories than any coach in state history.

This book, however, is not so much about a storied coaching career as it is about the genesis of one.

As such, it is a story of a boy and his friends-and the small town in which they grew up. Using in-depth interviews with the major players-Price, Fox, Raper, and veteran Paden City High coach Bob Burton-to gain greater insight, O’Connor paints a vivid picture of life in Paden City in the ’50s and ’60s.

The book also contains a chapter on the history of Paden City as well as many period photographs.

“From Paden City to The Panhandle: The Denny Price Story” will officially go on sale locally Nov. 30 with a book launch at the Paden City Public Library between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
