Dylan Romine set the new all time scoring record for the Silver Knights, now standing at 60 goals in his career.

The Silver Knight boys soccer team at Tyler Consolidated completed the first half of their season last week in a big way, winning two games and ending the third in a tie.

On Sept. 18 at ____ the Knights faced off with the Monarchs of John Marshall, taking the win, 5-2.

“We controlled the game for the majority of the time,” said head coach of the Silver and Black, Scott Wall. “We led 2-0 at the half. But we let them beat us on the back side to let them score in the second half.”

The Knights added three goals to their own score to take the win.

Scoring goals in the game for Consolidated were Matthew Goudy, Federicdo Perez, Dylan Reynolds and Dylan Romine (who netted two goals).

Assists were credited to Chase Cornell and Jonas Bach.

Keeper Nathan Heintzman had six saves.

“We took 15 shots on goal,” said the coach. “We played well, our spacing was good and we communicated like we’re supposed to. Our team work paid off.”

On Sept. 19 Tyler Consolidated hosted the Yellow Jackets of Williamstown, getting the win 2-1 in a close, physical match.

“They played us tough,” Wall said. “The score was 0-0 at the half and we were scrambling to score.”

Romine finally got one past the goalie for a Knight score with an assist from Bach. But the Jackets soon put their own point on their side of the scoreboard to even the two teams up at 1-1.

On the kick-off, after the Williamstown goal, Romine showed his strength and guile with a solid kick, straight from mid-field into the net past the keeper for a Silver Knight goal.

“It was something to see,” Wall said. “It was about a 55 yarder I’d say. It was an unbelievable shot and it put some life back into our team.”

“We also moved Matthew Goudy to sweeper in the second half and that also paid off for us. He’s aggressive, fast, has one of the strongest legs on the team and is super reliable in that position, and it made a difference. Nate Lantz and Quentin Richards also did a good job on defense.”

Williamstown took three shots on goal to the Knights’ eight.

The 2012 runner-up to the state champion, Fairmont Sr., played at Burbacher Field in Middlebourne on Saturday, giving the Knights a run for their money on the day, but winding up tying with the Silver when all was said and done, 1-1.

“We held them scoreless in the first half, 0-0,” coach Wall said. “But in the second they had a chance at a corner kick off a header and scored. But we turned it around and Romine got a penalty kick and put the ball in the back of the net for us, tying the game.”

The wet, rainy and windy conditions caused havoc on both sides of the ball for both teams in the game, but the Silver stepped up and held their own with Fairmont, finally ending the game after 80 minutes in a 1-1 tie.

“We played tough,” Wall said. “We held our own and had a few chances to add to our score, but it just didn’t happen. But we’ll take the tie over a loss any day.”

Just barely missing the OVAC tournament this year, the Silver Knights end the first half of the 2013 season with a record of 6-3-2.

Knight senior, Dylan Romine, achieved a milestone in his career last week as he surpassed past team mate Skylar Kinnard’s all time scoring record for the school with 60 goals in his four years as a Silver Knight soccer player. Thus far this season, Romine has scored 18 with half a season yet to play.

“We have a week off since we didn’t make the OVAC tournament,” the coach said. “And we do have some things to work on. But we’re going in the right direction and expect the second half of our season to be better than the first.”

The Silver Knights will play again on Oct. 3 at Magnolia.
