Knight and Wildcat golfers look toward postseason
With the end of their season looming in the very near future, local high school golfers participated in only one match last week.
Tyler Consolidated and Paden City High School golf teams played at the Sistersville Country Club on Sept. 18 with three other teams.
The Linsly team placed first overall in the match in team scoring with 163 points; Magnolia took second with 190; Tyler Consolidated scored 205; John Marshall, 210; and Paden City scored 213.
“We were happy to beat John Marshall and Paden City, but we should have been closer to Magnolia’s score,” said Knight head coach, Joe Griffith. “At practice we worked at the driving range, trying to improve their shots off the tee.”
“In the match, Nathan played well, while the others had scores that are higher than they should be shooting on their home course.”
For the Silver Knights, junior Nathan Kemp led the team as low man with a score of 42. Adam Cooper turned in a 53; Sean Camerlin, 54; John Lancaster, 56; and Kaleb Tanley, 57.
Levi Meadows led the Wildcat team with the low score of 48; Jeremy Mercher, 53; Aaron Heasley, 55; Dean Frye, 57; Kaleb Byers, 61 and Dezirae Middleton, 73.
The junior varsity had a chance to hit the links on the day as well with the Silver Knights Isaac Michael scoring 59; Levi Hudson, 62; and Kellsi Anderson 67; and the ‘Cats Kobe Wade turning in a 68; Logan Crawford, 69; and Travis Leonard, 89.
“We are looking toward the final week of regular season, with the LKC Tournament on Monday, our final home match on Wednesday, and then an 18-hole match at Williams Country Club in Weirton, which is the site of our regional tournament,” Griffith said.
“I am hoping to improve by Regionals next week so we have a shot at going to states,” Kemp said.
Team mate, Adam Cooper added, “My scores are improving and I’m striving to shoot in the low 90’s at LKC. We only have three matches left, and I’m looking for three great scores.”
Tyler Consolidated’s win/loss record now stands at 21/45. The team will host their annual Parents Night on Sept. 25 at the Sistersville Country Club.
