Though the calendar reads only the third week of April, the West Virginia High School baseball season is at its mid-way point. Both the Tyler Consolidated Knights and Paden City Wildcat teams will be busy on the diamonds around the Ohio Valley in the coming weeks, striving to get games on their schedule in and hoping to add to their win columns.

Wildcats

Paden City played host to the St. Marys Blue Devils on April 10, winding up on the short end of the 7-2 score when all was said and done.

“We competed with them for seven innings,” said Wildcat head coach Brent Croasmun. “We played pretty well, but just couldn’t get the win.”

Isaac Hall controlled the game from the mound for the Green and White, striking out six Blue Devils and walking six.

The ‘Cats had three hits in the game: Luke Cooper singled and drove in one run; Levi Meadows hit a single; Michael Wilcox singled; and Logan Carroll collected one RBI.

On April 13 the ‘Cats welcomed Bridgeport, Ohio, to the Paden City ball fields for a double header, but felt the sting of defeat twice on the day.

In the first game, the visitors took the win 10-1. Zach Heasley was on the mound for the home team, striking out one and walking one in the loss. Meadows threw the last two innings, issuing three walks.

Offensively, Deven Price hit two singles for the Wildcats and Cooper added a single.

In the second game, the ‘Cats fell to their opponents 13-3.

“They were a very good ball team,” Croasmun said. “Our kids were a little intimidated and it showed. Still, we needed to be more competitive.”

The loss went to Luke Cooper on the mound, striking out one batter and issuing four walks. Craig Allen came on in relief for the last inning.

At the plate, Hall singled for an RBI; Allen collected an RBI on a fielder’s choice; and Michael Wilcox hit a single to reach base.

The Wildcats will be busy this week, playing at Valley on Monday; going to Tyler Consolidated on Wednesday for a double header; heading to Cameron on April 18; and to East Richland on Saturday for a double header.

Silver Knights

The Silver Knight baseball team hosted the Doddridge County Bulldogs on April 11, gaining their third win of the season by an 8-6 score.

Freshman Jordan Baker worked the mound for the Silver and Black for two innings, handing out three walks; junior Evan Davis came on in relief for a couple of innings, walking two and striking out two. To complete the game, senior Koty Martin came on to get the win with three strike outs, to hold the Dogs scoreless.

Offensively, Baker went 1-4 at the plate, scoring two runs; Nathan Heintzman doubled, tripled, brought home two runs, and scored a run himself; Davis went 1-2 at the plate, scoring two runs; Jacob Stackpole doubled for an RBI; and Dillon Glover singled.

The Magnolia Blue Eagles came to Tyler County on April 13, taking the win over the Silver Knights 15-1 when all was done.

Evan Davis handled the duties on the mound for the Silver, taking the loss as the pitcher with two strikeouts and four walks. Isaac Michael came on in relief for the last inning, issuing one walk.

Davis, Martin, and Heintzman each singled for the home team in the effort.

On Saturday at home, the Knights faced off with Frontier, falling to the Cougars, 15-5.

Baker got the loss on the mound, but went 2-3 at the plate for three RBIs. Heintzman doubled and scored a run; and Stackpole hit a well placed single.

The Silver Knights will see action this week at home today when they host Paden City in a double header. On April 20 the team will host Ravenswood in two.
