Both Tyler Consolidated and Paden City high school baseball teams are putting a lot of dependence on inexperienced arms this season, with 10 freshmen in training for the Silver and another six for the Wildcats.

Though the inexperience overwhelms each team at times, both are starting to settle down and put game experience gained, to good use.

Silver Knights

With a learn as they go attitude, the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knight baseball team took one of four last week, and gained a wealth of experience for the underclassmen on the team.

On April 4 the team took on St. Marys in a double header, coming out short in both games, 14-0 and 10-0. Jordan Baker and Nathan Heintzman were charged with the losses on the mound. Heintzman and Austin Thompson each singled for the Silver.

At Calhoun on April 6, Consolidated again played two games back to back with their hosts, feeling the sting of loss in the first game, 14-5.

Senior Koty Martin worked the mound for the Black for four innings, taking the loss.

Martin and Thompson each singled in the game.

In the second game, Baker threw from the hill, striking out three in four innings for the 6-3 win. Martin came on for the save pitching three shut-out innings, sitting six opponents down with K’s.

Offensively, Baker, Heintzman and Martin all singled while Thompson singled twice and collected two RBI’s.

The Silver Knights will see time on the diamond this week at home on April 11 as they host the Bulldogs of Doddridge then Magnolia on April 12 for a 5 p.m. game.

Wildcats

Paden City played host to Frontier on Saturday in a double header allowing the visitors to take advantage of some late inning hits as well as a series of inopportune errors by the ‘Cats which cost the home team the first game of two, 19-5. Freshman Luke Cooper handled the pitching duties for the Green and White in the first part of the game, walking five and striking out two. Andrew Dennis came on in the sixth to walk two and Zach Heasley finished up the game on the mound with one walk and one strike out.

Offensively, Heasley knocked two home runs in the game; Levi Meadows hit two single for an RBI; Cooper doubled and hit a home run; Michael Wilcox hit two singles and Logan Carroll had one RBI.

Paden City’s youthfulness had the team bouncing back in no time and playing good ball in the second game, taking the win, 9-5 with only one defensive error.

Isaac Hall went the distance on the mound, throwing seven strikeouts and walking eight batters.

At the plate, Deven Price singled twice; Meadows hit one single and collected two RBI’s; Craig Allen had two RBI’s; Heasley homered for an RBI; Hall hit two singles and had one RBI; and Dennis placed two singles.

The Wildcats will host St. Marys on Wednesday and will welcome Bridgeport to Paden City on Saturday at noon for a double header.
