Knights win back-to-back OVAC Cheer Championships

2013 OVAC Cheerleading Champion - Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights

The WesBanco Arena in Wheeling was the place to be on Saturday for cheerleaders and fans of the sport of cheerleading itself for the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Cheerleading Championships. Five divisions of cheerleading squads, representing 29 schools, performed for the large crowd on hand with the Silver Knight cheerleaders of Tyler Consolidated winning their second straight OVAC title in the class AAA division.

The Knights competed in the same division as Bellaire, Linsly, Magnolia, Monroe Central and River, coming out on top with a near perfect routine. Linsly placed second behind the Silver and Black and the Magnolia squad placed third.

At the OVAC competition, cheerleading squads were judged on cheers, dances and sideline cheers within a three-minute time period. Partner stunts, pyramids, mounts etc. were not permitted.

The Tyler Consolidated cheerleaders are coached by Stefanie Suter and Laci Strode. Members of the 2013 OVAC championship squad are: Alex Bubenchik, Makayla Clegg, Jessica Fiber, Sydney Glover, Jayme Jeffers, Brooke Keys, Logann Long, Shandi Long, Sierra Mace, Kali Mead, Laken Miller, Katlyn Seckman, Randy Taylor and Megan Wilson.

Wheeling Park’s cheerleaders took their 16th OVAC title in the 5-A class with Brooke finishing as runner-up; the St. Clairsville squad placed first in the 4-A competition; and the Toronto Red Knights edged out Wheeling Central for the title in the AAA competition.
