The two local high school boys basketball teams have been able to get a few games in despite Mother Nature causing cancellations and postponements of late. Both the Knights of Tyler Consolidated and Paden City Wildcats tucked wins under their belts in last week’s competitions.

Silver Knights

The Silver Knights hosted the St. Marys Blue Devils at Tyler Consolidated on Jan. 29, and put forth a valiant effort, but came up just short of the win, 49-46.

The Knights controlled the game for the majority of the first half, leading by 27-20 at the break. A determined Blue Devil team turned the tables on the hosts in the fourth, taking the win.

Junior Dylan Romine was the go-to guy at the basket for the Silver, scoring 20 points in the contest. He brought down four points, had two assists and four steals. Senior Darren Heintzman added 16 points, pulled down nine rebounds and was credited with two steals and two blocked shots; Tim Edwards scored four points and had two rebounds; Scott Sole, four points, one rebound, one assist, three steals; Dylan Reynolds, two points, two rebounds, seven assists and a blocked shot; Randall Eastham, five rebounds, three blocks; Cole Kocher, one assist; and Drew Casey brought down a rebound.

Romine caught fire for the Knights on Feb. 2 as the team took it to Ravenswood at home to get the win, 77-67.

Getting out to a 26-7 first period score allowed the Knights some breathing room as they played pretty evenly throughout the rest of the game with the Red Devils.

Romine topped the scoreboard for all scorers in the game with 27. He also had two rebounds, four assists, five steals and blocked two Ravenswood shots. Heintzman scored 18 points, brought down eight rebounds, had one assist and one blocked shot; Edwards had a nice game with 12 points scored and hauled in five rebounds; Sole scored 10 points, had three rebounds, two assists and three steals; Reynolds, seven points, four rebounds, 10 assists, two steals; Kocher, three points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals, one blocked shot; Casey, one rebound; Eastham, four rebounds, four blocked shots; and Swen Scheidemantel scored a point.

The Silver Knights will see action again on Feb. 8 when they host Doddridge at 6 p.m. The Knights will also host Parkersburg Catholic on Feb. 12 at 6 p.m.

Wildcats

The Wildcats traveled to Cameron on Jan. 30 to take on the Dragons, only to return home to Wetzel County with the 80-46 loss. Cameron jumped out to a 24-3 first period lead and held the ‘Cats to 11 points in the first half. In the third, Paden City came alive and put 22 points on their side of the scoreboard, but it was too-little-too-late as the Dragons steadily padded their own score.

Sophomore Kennedy Cain led all Wildcat scorers in the game with 13 points. He brought down seven rebounds, one steal and one assist. Zach Heasley added 10 points to the mix, led the team in rebounds with 10 and was credited with one assist; Drew Bidwell added six points, had one assist, four steals and two rebounds; Luke Cooper had six points, five rebounds, two steals; Craig Allen, four points, one assist, two rebounds; Deven Price, two points, one assist; Levi Meadows, two points, one rebound; Logan Carroll, two points, three rebounds; Brandon Cross, one assist; and Kane Pyles, one point, one assist, one rebound.

In the Hometown Invitational Tournament semi-final game at Paden City on Feb. 2, the Wildcats put together a solid effort to take the 56-46 win over Union.

Zach Heasley topped all Paden City scorers in the game with 19, followed closely behind by Cain with 17. Heasley also brought down five rebounds, had one steal, and three assists, while Cain hauled in seven boards, and had four assists; Bidwell chipped in 12 points, had four rebounds, two steals and three assists; Cross totaled four points, one steal and one rebound; Allen, two points, one rebound, one steal; and Cooper scored two points, had two steals, one assist and brought down 10 rebounds.

The ‘Cats now stand at 11-5 on the season and look to add to the win side of their record this week as they travel to Summersville on Feb. 8 for the H.I.T. championships.
