Ladies kick-off season at Holiday tourney
West Virginia girls basketball season began last week with local teams Tyler Consolidated and Paden City posting wins. Both teams also had the opportunity to interact with each other as they faced off in the championship game of the Lady Wildcat Christmas Classic Tournament in Paden City.
The Lady Knights started off the 2012-13 season in a big way with a win over the Lady Hornets of Hundred, 74-26 in the first game of the Lady Wildcat Christmas Tournament on Nov. 30 at Bob Burton Gymnasium.
The Silver had four players scoring in double digits in the contest including junior Sophie Kinnard with 20, seniors Allison Wable and Torrye Cline with 19 each and junior Sydney Reed with 11.
The Knights turned in a nice performance in the game, taking the lead by 28 points at the half and scored 24 points in the third period to take the win.
Kinnard also tallied nine rebounds, four steals, and one assist; Wable pulled down four rebounds, blocked a shot, had five steals and two assists; Cline, had four boards, five steals, and two assists; Reed tallied three rebounds, two steals and one assist; Breanna Yeater, two points, four rebounds; Tiffany Spencer, one point, three rebounds, one steal, one assist; Ariel Fish, one point, two rebounds; Hannah Casteel, one point, three rebounds; Megan Carpenter hauled in five rebounds, had one steal and one assist; Hillary Casteel, two rebounds, three steals, two assists; Sydney Yoho, three rebounds, two steals, one assist; and Laura Seckman had one rebound.
In the second game of the tournament, the Lady ‘Cats battled for the win over the Valley Lumber Jills, 58-47 in a well matched contest. The Lady Wildcats took a three-point lead after the first period of play, and extended it to 31-18 at the half, before Valley finished the game with a 29-27 run.
Senior Logan Cosper led the Green and White in scoring in the game with 22; junior Myah Charkawi scored nine points and had 10 rebounds; Lynnsie Parsons scored eight; Cydney Blatt, seven points, 10 rebounds; Taylor Cosper had six points and had five assists; Hannah Stanley, three points; Lynnah Stanley, two points; and Kelsey Loy scored a point and pulled down six rebounds in the win.
On Saturday, the Lady Hornets pulled out the win over Valley, 52-40, to take third place in the tournament.
The championship game pitted the home town ‘Cats against the visitors from Tyler Consolidated with the Lady Knights turning in four solid quarters of ball to take the 67-31 win.
The Knights jumped out to a 21 point lead at the break to put the score at 35-14 and take a decided lead in the contest.
Kinnard led all Knight scorers in the game with 27 points and 12 rebounds. She also was credited with three blocks, five steals and three assists. Reed totaled 24 points in the game, five rebounds, four steals and seven assists; Hillary Casteel scored four points, had nine rebounds, three steals and three assists; Sydney Yoho contributed four points, had eight rebounds and two steals; Fish scored four, had five rebounds and one steal; Carpenter added two points, had five rebounds, two blocks and three steals; Kaitlyn Gogan added two points; Seckman, two rebounds; Hannah Casteel, two rebounds; and Yeater brought down five rebounds.
For Paden City, Charkawi paced the team with 11, while Logan Cosper, Cydney Blatt and Lynah Stanley each put up four points apiece. Kayla Barker and Kayla Hizer added three points each and Taylor Cosper contributed two points in the game.
“This was a good tournament for us,” said Lady Knight head coach Matt Kinnard. “We had some girls who showed they could step up and take the reins and make a difference in a game. It was also a good tournament in that fans filled the gym because four local teams were playing.”
Members of the teams making the all-tournament team were: Valley, Sam Thomas; Hundred, Katelyn Tennant and Emily Ebert; Paden City, Myah Charkawi and Logan Cosper; and Tyler Consolidated, Sophie Kinnard, Sydney Reed and Hillary Casteel.
The Lady Wildcats will see action again on Dec. 11 at Cameron and on Dec. 14 at East Richland. The Lady Knights will host St. Marys on Dec. 6 and play at Parkersbug Catholic on Dec. 11.
