SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT
High School cheerleading squads all over the state of West Virginia will be in their best form this week as the sport will hold Regionals in all classes to determine who will compete at the State Cheerleading Championships in Charleston in December.
Locally, Tyler Consolidated and Paden City High School squads have been fine tuning their own performances in preparation for the competition, and both are poised to advance to state.
The Region I Cheerleading competition will be held on Nov. 3 at Wheeling Park High School, with all three classes, A, AA, and AAA competing at different times during the day.
The Class A competition will begin at 10 a.m. with teams competing in the following order: Clay Battelle, Bishop Donahue, Weirton Madonna, St. Marys, Tyler Consolidated, Magnolia, Cameron, Wheeling Central, Paden City, and Valley.
“We’re excited and nervous at the same time,” said Tyler Consolidated head cheerleading coach, Stefanie Suter. “The girls are ready, we know are routine, we’re comfortable . . . but we’re still very nervous.”
Because in cheerleading, anything can happen.
Last year the Lady Knights performed a near perfect routine at the Regionals but were not judged to be in the top two finishers at the competition, therefore did not qualify to advance to the State championships. This year, the determined Lady Knights have a different scenario planned.
“Last year we were so very disappointed not to have placed. But this is another year, a different competition and all we can do is the best we can,” Suter said. “We’re going up against last years Class A champions, Clay-Battelle, so we have our work cut out for us. But we’re up to the challenge. The girls are ready.”
Members of the 2012 Tyler Consolidated squad include: Makayla Clegg, Jessica Fiber, Logann Long, Randy Taylor, Alex Bubenchik, Shandi Lane, Kali Mead, Brooke Keys, Laken Miller, Sierra Mace, Megan Wilson, Jayme Jeffers, Sydney Glover, Katlyn Seckman.
The 2011 Paden City cheerleading squad, under the direction of head coach Rachel Stoneking, brought home the runner-up trophy at their Regionals and represented Region I at State. The Wildcats also turned in an excellent performance and placed second behind Regional champions, Bishop Donahue.
This year, Stoneking says her squad is ready to give their best effort on the court again.
“We’re ready, and I like our routine, but there is going to be some tough competition in our class. We’re going to do our best.”
Members of the Paden City Wildcat squad include: Lynnsie Parsons, Madison Pierce, Sa,mantha Lyons, Cydney Blatt, Desiree Heasley, Tori Anderson, Kayla Hizer, Akayla Kline, and Hannah Stanley.
The competition format at the Regional will include a 30-40 second technical cheer and a two minute, 30 second open routine which will be scored by a panel of WVSSAC assigned judges.
The Class AA competition will begin at 2 p.m. at Wheeling Park with teams competing in the following order: Weir, East Fairmont, Oak Glen, Roane County, Ritchie County, Webster, Fairmont Senior, North Marion, Braxton County and Ravenswood.
The Class AAA teams will begin their competition also at Wheeling Park at 6 p.m. Order of competition is as follows: Wheeling Park, Parkersburg, Parkersburg South, University, John Marshall, Morgantown, Preston, and Brooke.
The State Cheerleading Championships will be held at the Civic Center in Charleston on Dec. 7. The top two teams from each class in each Region will advance to compete at State.
