In a David vs. Goliath scenario, the Paden City Wildcats found themselves out manned, out gunned, and out played by the Cee Bee’s of Clay-Battelle on Friday night in Blacksville, falling to their hosts, 65-0.

“We just couldn’t match up with them,” said Wildcat head coach Brent Croasmun.

“They have great numbers, good size and good experience returning to their team. We have sixteen guys, and eight of them are freshmen. That kinda told the story of the whole game.”

Another facet of the story is the fact that Wildcat starting quarterback, Zach Heasley went out with an injury after the second series of play, forcing the ‘Cats to rearrange their entire game plan, built around the sophomore.

“We ran our offense with sophomore Brandon Cross at the quarterback position, which took away our throwing game because he’s unused to that position, and took away the majority of our running game as well since Cross is one of our starting go-to guys at the running back position.”

Clay-Battelle scored early and often while Paden City struggled to achieve positive stats.

Positive results included Cross rushing 17 times for 50 yards and Craig Allen rushing four times for three yards. In the receiving dept., Kennedy Cain caught two passes for 11 yards; and Drew Bidwell had two catches for five yards.

Cross gained 92 yards on five kick-off returns and Allen had 20 yards on two returns.

Defensively, Kennedy Cain was credited with nine tackles and one fumble cause; Logan Carroll had eight tackles; Cross, six tackles; Luke Cooper, five tackles and Bidwell, five tackles.

The Wildcats are scheduled to host the Van Bulldogs on Friday at home at Berger Field at 7:30 p.m.. However, due to damage to the light poles on the field during the June 29 storm, the game may be moved to Saturday afternoon.

The new poles are to be installed this week, hopefully in time for the traditional home opener on Friday night in front of the Paden City faithful.
