Lady Knights and ‘Cats face solid teams
Both the Tyler Consolidated Lady Knights and Paden City Lady Wildcats have seen some solid action of late, with both teams facing good opponents and tough competition. The Lady Knights and head coach Matt Kinnard and the Lady Wildcats and head coach Kelly Sine each continue to strategize their game plans, looking towards post-season match-ups and competition.
On Jan. 21 Tyler Consolidated hosted the Region I Classic Tournament, featuring teams from Region I at the Knights gym. The Ladies in Silver found themselves taking on the 7-7 Ravenswood Lady Red Devils at the tourney, taking the eventual win, 50-46, in an exciting game.
The Silver met the challenge head on in the first period, scoring 16 points while holding the Red to 13 to take the lead. In the second, Consolidated maintained their lead, but allowed Ravenswood to score 10 while they added only nine to their score, putting the home team in the lead at the half by a two point margin, 25-23.
In the second half, the Lady Knights scored 11 points while the Lady Devils added nine to their side of the scoreboard. Both teams scrambled hard both defensively and offensively in the fourth, each scoring 14 points. But the Silver came out with the win in the end, 50-46, putting their win/loss record at 7-7 thus far on the year.
Junior Torrye Cline led the home team in scoring with 19 points. She pulled down three rebounds, had two steals, and five assists. Allison Wable scored 13 points, had seven rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and one assist; Sophie Kinnard, 10 points, 11 rebounds, one block, four assists; Sydney Reed, six points, three rebounds, one steal, three assists; Kyrsten Cline, two points, one rebound, one steal; Sydney Yoho, one rebound; and Breanna Yeater, three rebounds, one block.
The Paden City Lady Wildcats out-scored their hosts, 25-16 in the second half, and senior Dominique Craft returned to form, scoring 11 points, and grabbing 12 rebounds for a double-double. But, it wasn’t enough, as Wood County Christian picked up its first victory of the season with a 45-40 victory over the disapointed Lady Wildcats of Paden City, Jan. 17.
Wood County raced out to a quick 14-6 run, and extended its lead to 29-14 at the break. However, the Wildcats Head Coach Kelly Sine gave his lady cagers a toungue lashing, and they responded with their best second half performance of the season.
Logan Cosper followed Crafts performance with three second half triples, while freshman Hannah Stanley continued to showchase her skills, with eight markers, Lynnsie Parson connected on a pair of deuces and a free throw, while Amanda Heasley tallied five markers and pulled down 10 rebounds for all the Wildcat scoring.
After a rematch with Bishop Donahue on Jan. 24, the Lady Wildcats will host Ohio foe, East Richland Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
At Paden City on Jan. 17 the Lady Knights and Lady Wildcats faced off at Bob Burton Gymnasium in Paden City in what turned out to be a close battle until Tyler Consolidated turned up the heat in the third period to take the lead and eventually the win, 75-44.
The Lady Knights put 16 points on their side of the scoreboard in the first period while holding the Green and White to 12. In the second, Paden City battled hard adding 14 points to their score, but were unable to stop the Silver from putting up 21 of their own to put the score, 37-26 at the half.
In the third, Paden City was held to only five points while Consolidated racked up 13. In the final stanza, the Knights overwhelmed the ‘Cats by a point total of 25-13, taking the win, 75-44.
The Lady Knights put together a total team effort with four players in double digits. Kinnard, led all scorers in the game with a double-double of 21 points and 16 rebounds. She was also credited with two blocks, five steals and four assists. Wable added 15 points, had nine rebounds and two steals; Reed, 14 points, six rebounds, one block, one steal and three assists, Torrye Cline, 13 points, two rebounds, five steals and one assist; Kyrsten Cline, six points, two rebounds, three steals and two assists; Yoho, two points, two rebounds; Yeater, two points; Tiffany Spencer, four rebounds; Haleigh Smith, two rebounds.
Paden City’s Logan Cosper scored 17 points for the home team, including five three-pointers. Hannah Stanley scored nine; Dominique Craft had eight points and 10 rebounds; Amanda Heasley added seven points; Lynah Stanley had two points and Lynnsie Parsons, one.
The Lady Knights traveled to Ritchie County on Jan. 24 and will host Williamstown on Jan. 26. On Jan. 31 the team will face-off with the Lady Blue Eagles of Magnolia, in New Martinsville.
