Ladies finish season with 4 wins

The Lady Knight soccer team at Tyler Consolidated was scheduled to participate in three games last week, but due to weather and official concerns for safety, only two games were played.

The Silver and Black Ladies played at Linsly on Oct. 11 taking the loss, 5-0 when all was done.

“We held our own in the first half, and kept the score at zero-all,” said head coach of the Lady Knights, Cliff Warner. “But they found a way to score in the second, and we just couldn’t keep up. They changed their formation, we changed our formation, but we just couldn’t find the net which has been trouble for us all season.”

The junior varsity team saw action at Linsly as well. “The girls played well against their junior varsity,” the coach said. “We took some nice shots and the girls got field experience.”

At home at Burgbacher Field in Middlebourne on Oct. 13, the Lady Knights battled against both the Lady Hawks of South Harrison as well as Mother Nature. Delayed about a half an hour at the very beginning of the game due to weather considerations, Tyler Consolidated and South Harrison played on muddy field conditions and at times in driving rain. But they did play and finish the game without injury.

The Silver, Black and muddy Lady Knights took the eventual win, 3-1 with goals scored by freshman, Haleigh Smith, and seniors Lindsay and Marley Snider.

“We kept their keeper busy,” Warner said. “She had 18 saves in the game while our keeper, Sophie Kinnard, had three.”

“Even though it was a muddy mess, our girls played very well, stayed in position and kept to their responsibilities. We were setting ourselves up for the Saturday game, but that didn’t work out for us very well.”

On Saturday, the Lady Knights were scheduled to host Ravenswood at home at 11 a.m. with senior ceremonies to follow immediately. It was decided by officials present, that because of safety issues, the game would be cancelled. Not forfeited, not postponed, cancelled.

“This was a heartbreaker for us,” Warner said. “It was to be our last game of the season and the girls were truly looking forward to playing. They were prepared mentally and physically, and it’s just a shame they didn’t get to play.”

The team did go ahead with the senior ceremonies however, with the 11 senior members of the team and their parents, recognized and honored. Senior members of the team include: Meggie Warner, Carissa Beaver, Lindsay Snider, Marley Snider, Tiffany Kernan, Alexis Ebert, Jennifer Yost, Tara Weese, Alaina McCoy, Gabby Clegg and Kylie Yeater.”We do wish we could have got this one last game in,” the coach said. “But since that wasn’t to be, we made the best of it by still honoring our seniors. We’d like to offer our appreciation to all the parents who participated and helped make the day special for the girls.”

The Lady Knights began Sectional play on Tuesday in New Martinsville against the Lady Blue Eagles of Magnolia. The winner of this game will go on to the Sectional championships on Thursday in Wheeling.
