Memorial golf tourney is held
The second annual “Gary ‘Oscar’ Henderson Memorial Golf Tournament,” held in memory of a beloved local golfer, is to take place at St. Marys Golf Course on May 21, 2011, with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to the National Foundation for Cancer Research.
The event, which raised $1200 last year, commemorates a retired educator and golf enthusiast who passed away from cancer approximately five years ago. Though he was given the nickname “Oscar” due to his sometimes-grouchy demeanor, Gary Henderson was admired by many.
“He was a very generous man,” said Jim Ankrom, director of the tournament and close friend of Henderson. “He never hesitated to provide golf equipment, clothes, food-you name it-to a kid in need, and he even donated his body to the West Virginia University Hospital for research. We wanted to do something to honor his life and help find a cure for those still fighting, which NFCR is doing through their groundbreaking research.”
The day will include a four-person scramble style golf tournament, an on-course contest with prizes, breakfast and an after-tournament meal. Tee time is 9:00 a.m.
Cost of entry is $200 per team with $40 team skins. For more information or to register, call St. Marys Golf Course at 304-684-3557.
