Knight wrestlers finish season on home mat
The Silver Knight wrestlers participated in the Little Kanawha Conference wrestling championships on Feb. 5 at Ravenswood High School.
The team representing Clay County took the overall team win at the event, followed in order by Wirt County, Braxton County, Calhoun County, Roane County, Williamstown, St. Marys,, Ritchie County, Ravenswood, Tyler Consolidated, South Harrison and Parkersburg Catholic.
Wins for the Knights at the tournament were gained by John Brosky, 119, who won over Matt Wood of Ravenswood by a fall to get the win; and Dustin Tawney, 171, major decisioned Jacob Helmick of Braxton County.
The Knights had two place winners at the tournament, both by seniors. Wrestling at 152 – Calvin McCune placed fourth by defeating St. Marys’ Cody Everett 8-6 and Braxton’s Gary Facemire, by a fall. Adam Cross, 215, defeated Nathan Greene of Braxton, 6-2 for fourth place.
The Silver Knights were scheduled to host John Marshall and St. Marys on Feb. 9 at home in their last tri-match of the season.
Due to school cancellations, however, St. Marys was unable to make the trip and the event turned into a dual between Tyler Consolidated and the Monarchs.
Brosky pulled out a win for the home team in overtime and McCune took the win in an exhibition match.
With the regular season now at a close, the Silver Knights will vie for placement in the Class AA, Region I, Regional tournament on Feb. 18-19 at Williamstown High School.
The Consolidated Knights will look to place team members in the top four places per weight class at the Regional when the day is over in order to make an appearance at the state tournament in Huntington on Feb. 24-26.
Going up against wrestlers from Ravenswood, Weir, Magnolia, Oak Glen, Ritchie County, Roane County and Pt. Pleasant, the Silver Knights will have their work cut out for them.
