Ladies begin basketball season

Both the Lady Wildcats of Paden City and the Lady Knights of Tyler Consolidated began their seasons last week. Still learning the ropes and setting up their strategies for the season, both teams are still looking for their first win.

Lady Wildcats

Jefferson County Christian handed the Lady Wildcats their first loss in the season opener, 34-25 on Nov. 30. Paden City kept the game close in the first half, leading by a point, 14-13 at the half. But a strong 15 point third quarter put Jefferson County ahead and eventually gave them the win.

Megan Cutlip led the ‘Cats with eight points in the game. Logan Cosper scored seven; Dominique Craft and Sam Shreves each totaled four; and Joni Myers added two.

The Lady Wildcats hosted their annual Christmas tournament on Dec. 3-4 inviting teams from Valley, Clay-Battelle and Bridgeport, OH. The Lady Cee Bee’s came out on top as the winner of the tournament with Valley placing second, Bridgeport third and then the ‘Cats.

Against Valley, the Lady Lumberjacks jumped out to the lead early in the game, leading by 10 points in the first period of play. Paden City held strong though, adding 16 points in the second and third stanza’s, but a 14 point effort in the fourth by Valley, told the story of the 47-24 game.

Cutlip was the top scorer for the Green and White with seven points. Craft added six; Sam Shreves had three; Heasley scored three; Cosper added two and Tiffany Palmer scored on one end of a foul shot.

Bridgeport defeated Paden City to the tune of 43-35, in a hard fought battle for third place in the tournament. Bridgeport led from the first period, outscoring the ‘Cats 9-6, and leading 23- 18 at the half.

Craft was on her game with 15 points to lead the Green, three of them three-pointers. Cutlip scored 12; Myers added four; Cosper and Amanda Heasley scored two points apiece. Heasley had nine rebounds in the game; Craft and Cutlip had seven rebounds apiece.

The Lady Wildcats played at Hundred on Tuesday and will see action at Beallsville on Dec. 10.

Lady Knights

The Lady Knights hosted St. Marys on Dec. 2 and fell hard to defeat, 81-32 at the hands of the Blue Devils. Busting out to a big 18-8 first period score, the St. Marys team led the Knights at every break in the physical game.

Freshman Sophie Kinnard led all Knight scorers in the game with 13 points. Sami Jones added six points; Torrye Cline had five; Heather Suter, Lynsey Casteel, and Maddi Schlabowski each scored two points apiece; and Keri Suter, and Whitney Williams each added a point.

At home on Dec. 4, Tyler Consolidated played host to the Ravenswood Red Devils, again taking the loss, but this time by a lesser margin, 55-47.

Senior Heather Suter led all Knight scorers with 15 points. Cline scored 10: Jones put up eight; Casteel added eight; and Keri Suter scored six in the Silver and Black effort.

The Lady Knights will see action again on Dec. 16 at home versus Oak Glen. On Dec. 20 the team will host Doddridge.
