Nearly 140 cars jammed the Tyler County Speedway for regular and makeup racing Saturday. Of the thirteen features ran this past week, there were nine new faces in victory lane.

In the first makeup feature from May 1; the Modifieds, J.P. Roberts used his pole starting spot to grab the lead and never look back for his first feature win of the season. Brian Probst, Mike Wilson, Rick Venham Jr., and Del Cunningham rounded out the top five.

Greg Conger out dragged pole setter Kurt Burge to the first turn of the Sigler Fabrication Hot Mod finale and never relinquished the spot. Conger took his first checkers of the year as Glenn Underwood would cross in second. Devin Verardi, Travis Thomas and Burge filled out the top five.

Jeff Fornash kept his winning streak alive as his snagged his fifth consecutive WXCR 92.3 Classic Rock Pure Stock feature ahead of Levi Flesher, Nick Ley, Cody Henthorn and Mike Mason Jr.

The Mod Lites saw Sonny Conley take his first victory of the year as he bested, Brent Irvin, Brandon Fluharty, Mitch Herrick and Steve Weekly.

With many area tracks idle this week many new faces dotted the lineups. In the Dodd’s Sporting Goods Late Models Robbie Scott jumped to the lead but a bonsai move from Butch McGill on the opening lap in turn three resulted in McGill leading lap one. The green stayed out until lap seven when Jeremy Misel slowed and tried to pull off the track only to gather up Ed Shuman bringing out the yellow. McGill, Scott, Paul Wilmoth Jr., Steve Weigle and Scott Irvin were the top five. The caution waved again for Weigle who spun in turn four on lap eight. Irvin motored to third on lap nine, with Scott applying heavy pressure to McGill. On lap 11 Scott retook the lead from McGill.

The yellow was unfurled again on lap 18, when Danny Mitchell was hard into the turn two guard rail. Scott, McGill, Irvin, Wilmoth and Donnie Dotson were now the top five. Scott, running the middle groove continued to show the way while McGill had been running the high groove closed in. McGill made his move on lap 22 and regained the top spot. The Doddridge County Terror held off Mighty Mouse the final three circuits for his second trip to the winners circle this season. Irvin, Wilmoth and Dotson rounded out the top five.

In the FASTRAK feature K.C. Burdette would lead wire to wire enroute to his first win at the Bullring. Shane Hitt would finish in the second slot. Daniel Hill passed his way from sixth to third. Kyle Thomas started third, got to second, was docked a spot for jumping the restart, and finished fourth. Joe Loudin finished fifth.

The 2008 Modified points Champion, Brian Probst shot to the front on the opening circuit and would not give it up. J P Roberts and Mike Wilson gave chase but could not make a serious bid for the spot. They would finish second and third. Rick Venham would cross the stripe in fourth and Joe Hamon completed the top five.

Greg Conger was poised to win the daily double in the Sigler Fabrication Hot Mods but he over heated ending his quest.

Glenn Underwood inherited the lead and eventual win. It was the Cambridge Ohio driver’s second win of the year. Travis Thomas finished second., Kenny Isner was third, Devin Verardi was fourth and Cody Eaton was fifth.

A pair of 11’s dueled for the WXCR 92.3 Classic rock Pure Stocks as Brian Mitchell (#11M) out battled Jerrod Willis (#11W) for the victory. Cody Henthorn would follow the front duo for third. Chad Dotson was fourth and Randy Bohan completed the running order.

Tracy Fritter made a rare appearance pay off in the Mod Lites as he held off Sonny Conley for the checkerboard. Mitch Herrick nipped Brent Irvin at the line for third. Randy Armes was the fifth place finisher.

In the Champion Sports Cards and Trophies Junkyard Warriors Billy Bunnell oulasted the field to capture his first trip to victory lane this season. Larry Cumberledge Jr., Alex Mosser, Kevin Dotson and Kathy Bell rounded out the finishing order.

Hunter Partridge scored his third first place trophy in the first feature of the Bridgeport Equipment and Toll Mini Wedges. Partridge crossed ahead of Scott Perrine, Ryan Watson, Jordan Doty, and Alex Frazier. In the second feature Shayla Griffey won his career first as she beat Buckwheat Wright, Georgie Tennett, Wesley baker and Tiffany Jackson to the stripe.

This week at the Bullring is the 7th annual Eaton / Childers King of the Ring. The race originally started in 1999 with the Beecher Eaton Memorial with Gary Dalton winning. That race never ran again but in 2002 Bobby Hill won the inaugural Bill Childers Memorial. Hill repeated his success the next year. In 2004 the race became the Eaton / Childers King of the Ring. Steve Wilmoth grabbed the biggest victory of his career that year.

The recent winners are a list of who’s who in dirt racing. 2005 Steve Shaver, 2006 Mike Balzano, 2007 Paul Wilmoth Jr., 2008 Rick Aukland, 2009 Eddie Carrier Jr. Expect some of these and many other hotshoes vying for the $5,000 check.
