‘Cats take 4 firsts at Regional

By Staff | May 19, 2010

The Class A Region I Track Championships were showcased at Wheeling Park on May 12 and the Paden City Wildcats turned in some excellent performances to qualify athletes for the state meet next week.

Paden City had some show stoppers taking first place at the meet, including senior Malakai Anderson who took first in the 400 meter, the long jump and as part of the 4×200 relay team with Josh Bennett, Braxton Herrick and Taylor Still.

The Lady ‘Cat shuttle hurdle team of Amanda Tallman, Megan Cutlip, Taylor Parsons and Amanda Sellers took first place over all Regional competitors.

In order to qualify to compete at the West Virginia State Track Meet in Charleston next week, athletes had to have placed first, second or third in their Regional competition, and then the next four lowest times or highest distances of athletes throughout the state qualify. Paden City was fortunate enough to qualify five second place finishers and four third place finishers automatically.

Taking second at Regionals were: Megan Lasure in the shot put event; Amanda Sellers in the the girls 100 and 300 meter hurdles; the girls 4×100 relay team of Allison Bertozzi, Amanda Tallman, Taylor Parsons and Sellers; and the 4×200 team, Stephanie West, Tallman, Parsons and Bertozzi.

Third place finishers, and state qualifiers at the Regional for the Wildcats include: Taylor Still in the 200 meter; the boys 4×100 team of Bennett, Anderson, Herrick and Still; the girls 4×400 of Cutlip, Lynnsie Parsons, Dominique Craft and Bertozzi; and the girls 4×800, Erica Sapp, Logan Cosper, Amanda Heasley, and Craft.

The Paden City girls placed fourth overall in the team scoring at the Regional with 74 points. The Lady Bulldogs of Doddridge took the championship with an overall score of 166, followed by Wheeling Central, 94; Madonna, 90; Paden City, 74; Bishop Donahue, 63; Valley, 29; Clay-Battelle, 26; and Cameron with 13.

Paden City’s boys team found themselves in sixth place overall. The Doddridge County boys placed first in the team competition with 142.50 followed by Wheeling Central Catholic, 97; Bishop Donahue, 76.50; Valley, 58; Clay-Battelle, 53; Paden City, 49; Madonna, 42; and Cameron with 40 points.

The West Virginia High School State Track Championships will be held in Charleston at Laidley Field on May 21-22.
