Knights defeat Calhoun again

By Staff | May 13, 2009

TWO OF TYLER’S FINEST — Zach Perkey and Michael Cochran were honored for their contributions to the baseball program at Tyler Consolidated.

In their last regular season home game as Silver Knights, Michael Cochran and Zach Perkey both had spectacular days in leading their team to a 13-4 over Calhoun County.

The senior duo each went 2-2, including a school-record tying home run by Perkey, and scored a combined six runs to pace Tyler Consolidated.

The Red Devils made the trip to Kidwell for the second time this season to play the Knights in an LKC placement game. The two schools split a doubleheader earlier in the year.

In the second of the aforementioned twinbill, Tyler Consolidated jumped out to an early lead and nearly enforced the mercy rule before Calhoun County came close to making an improbable comeback.

The rubber match on Thursday saw nothing of the like.

In the first inning, Perkey sat down the first three batters via strikeout and received help from his teammates on the offensive end with seven runs scored.

Brody Northcraft led off with a walk and Brandon “Chippy” Grimes was hit by a pitch to set up Perkey. With the outfield playing deep, he proceeded to get a base hit straight up the middle with the high grass slowing the ball up just enough to allow the two baserunners to score before the centerfielder could make a play.

Garrett Amos would then reach safely on a base hit to right field. Cochran followed suit and tallied an RBI as Perkey was plated. Zack Knowlton did the same with a grounder that hugged the inside of the first base line as Amos scored and would eventually score himself.

Tyler Consolidated would increase their lead to 8-0 in the second as Grimes nailed a shot to the fence resulting in a triple. He would cross the dish shortly after on a fielder’s choice.

The Red Devils were able to score in the top of the third with the top three batters in the lineup all circling the bases.

The Knights answered in the bottom of the frame with Cochran and Cody Laugh scoring. Cochran reached on a base on balls and scored when Laugh hit a double to left field.

Calhoun County then scored their final run in their next at-bat

Perkey led off the bottom of the fourth inning in style with a solo home run to opposite field, tying to single-season school record for home runs. Once again, Cochran wasn’t too far behind as he safely hit to left field, stole second, and scored on another base hit by Laugh.

Tyler Consolidated’s offense would score their two final runs in the fifth with Grimes and Perkey scoring on a double to right-center field by Zack Minger.

On Saturday, the Knights took part in their final regular season games in Weirton in a doubleheader against the Madonna Blue Dons.

Both games would go the way of the Blue Dons as Game 1 saw the Knights fall 8-3 in a game that escaped them lated after taking a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the fifth before Weirton Madonna scored four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to win.

Garrett Amos and Cody Laugh both singled twice and tallied an RBI.

Game 2 was a vastly different story as Weirton Madonna took control early by going up 12-0 and never relinquished the lead en route two a 13-1 win.

Once again Amos provided the Knights with a single and an RBI. Blaise Rice had a strikeout in the losing cause.
