Locals compete in OVAC basketball all-star game
The 2009 OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Classic was played Sunday afternoon at the Ohio University Eastern Campus Gymnasium with several area basketball players and coaches took part. Up first was the Ohio girls taking on the Lady Mountaineers from West Virginia. Corinne Murdock from Magnolia, Lesta Kocher from Valley High School, Chelsea Musgrave and Matt Kinnard player and coach from Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights each competed.
West Virginia lost 96-60 to the Ohio All-Stars. Kocher was the second leading scorer for the Mountaineers with six points. She pulled down six rebounds and caused several Ohio turnovers. Murdock didn’t score, but had several key assists and caused countless turnovers. Musgrave scored two points and finished second in the three-point shootout at halftime with seven made baskets from beyond the arc. Kinnard was one of the assistant coaches for the Mountaineers.The West Virginia Mountaineers fought back from a 58-44 deficit in the Rudy Mumley All-Star Boys Basketball Classic, but fell a little short as Ohio nipped West Virginia 98-96 Sunday afternoon at Ohio University Eastern Campus Gymnasium.
A few players from our area competed in the All-Star festivities including Zach Perkey from Tyler Consolidated, Jon Rine from Magnolia, and Ricky Wright and Fred King from Paden City.
Perkey was outstanding for the Mountaineers, he scored 10 points and had several rebounds. Rine didn’t scored, but caused havoc on the floor causing four Ohio turnovers, dished off four assists, hauled in four rebounds and added four steals for the Mountaineers. Wright didn’t score until the second half. He made a move on a Ohio defender and scored a bucket that brought down the house, and made a basket from beyond the arc to knot the game at 96. He was set up to take the game winner, but Ohio stole the pass that sealed the deal for the Buckeyes. King served as an assistant coach.
