Silver Knight Football Wraps up August Practice

By Randy Rutherford - Sports Writer | Aug 28, 2024

In the last week and a half the Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights wrapped up their August camp with two scrimmages.

The Knights played host to Frontier High School on Saturday, August 24. I had the chance to talk to Coach Ritz, leader of the TCHS Silver Knights football team, to get his insights from the preseason scrimmages. “First scrimmages are exactly what you expect them to be, a little messy. But our guys came out and competed very hard. As a coach that’s something you don’t want to have to coach is having intensity and being ready to compete each whistle.”

Overall, the head coach is happy with what he observed from the Silver Knights. “We were able to get into a variety of packages and personnel groups on both sides of the ball and allow all 37 players on the roster an opportunity to go out and get quality work in. Coach Methany, from Frontier, does a great job with his team, and we believe the variety of offense gave our defense the chance to see some looks and formations that we anticipate seeing a lot of this fall.”

Their second scrimmage had the Knights traveling to Morgantown to University Field to take on Linsly and Jefferson High Schools in a tri-scrimmage on Thursday, August 22. Coach Ritz shared his thoughts concerning the Linsly and Jefferson scrimmage. “This is definitely a change up for our guys, playing a tri-scrimmage, at a neutral site, on a school day. But we had to ensure we got a second contest in, and Coach Depew of Linsly and Coach Hunter of Jefferson were more than happy to welcome us to their event, we greatly appreciate the chance.” Coach Ritz explained Jefferson has nearly triple the enrollment of TCHS, and the power Linsly will bring with their athletes, the Knights knew they are going to see very strong competition. “And overall, our guys went out and executed well on both sides of the ball. Obviously, things can be better, but we believe as a staff that our players are heading in a positive direction going into the season. Now, we are getting to work and preparing to suit up at home on Friday August 30 against Ritchie County. Let’s pack the stadium up!”
