TC Wrestling Defeats Lewis County
Even snow days couldn’t stop the Silver Knights mat men as they headed to Lewis County to square off in a dual match against the #10 ranked AA Minutemen. The Knights would come away with the win upending Lewis County, 35-30. Leading the way for the Knights were Luke Yoho, Colsen Spragg, Kellan Dalrymple, Nate Deaton, Branson Winfrey, and Sean Winfrey who all came away with impressive victories.
Head coach Eric McKeever is feeling optimistic. “We have now hit the final third of our season, and we are ready to head down the home stretch. We are still tightening up a few lose bolts, but I think we are ready to start making some noise from here on out.” The coach added the team wrestled well at Lewis County. He was unsure how the team would respond after being off school for several days because of snow, but he was very pleased with their performance.
“As a team, we haven’t cracked the Top 10 in Single A, yet we have beaten, pretty handedly, several of the Top 10 teams in both Single and Double A. Those things will take care of themselves, we just need to be more consistent,” added McKeever.
The Silver Knights have several individually ranked wrestlers in their respective weight classes. Colsen Spragg is ranked 7th in the 126-pound weight class while Sean Winfrey is ranked 3rd in the 190-pound weight class. “The 2nd set of female rankings have also come out and we have 3 of our 6 mat ladies ranked. Eliana Winfrey is currently ranked #1 at the 145-pound weight class. Brooklyn Michael is ranked 7th in the 175-pound weight division and Starrla Hales is also ranked 7th in the 235-pound class,” explained the coach concerning the team’s first female division. The Lady Knights as a team are ranked 13th overall in the state out of 44 female teams. Coach McKeever added the girls work extremely hard every day, and he is hoping this is the beginning of an all-girls team in years to come.
The Knights are off during the week as they will prepare for the Single “A” Challenge that will start at 4:30 Friday in Richie County with finals beginning around 5 on Saturday evening. The Knights final Home Match will be Senior Night next Wednesday, January 31st. Coach McKeever encourages everyone to come out and support the Knights Wrestling Team as this will be the last time to see the Seniors wrestle on their home mats. Match time is set for 6 PM.
