Magnolia Boys Bring home Gold in 4×800 meter relay

The 2022 Class A state track meet was held on Friday and Saturday May 20-21at Laidley Field in Charleston and went off without a hitch as local teams sent nearly 40 kids to the event in hopes of bringing home some hardware.
Magnolia Boys came away with the top honor in the 4×800 relay race as they beat the field in a blistering time of 8:44.73 to give the Blue Eagles 10 points on the day. Running the event for the Blue was Lucas Zombotti a junior, Landen Davis a freshman, Jordan Davis a junior and Brady Renner a senior. To win the event they beat out St. Marys who finished second with a time of 8:49.71.
Paden City picked up a third place finished in the boys 4×110 meter shuttle hurdles for a Silver medal as they ran a personal record 1:02.78 and just got clipped at the finish line by a strong Greenbrier West team who ran a 1:02.65. The Wildcat team of Jasup Spragg a senior, Julian Landauer a sophomore, Logan Smith a junior and Shane Anderson a senior gave the Wildcats six team points with the showing. Magnolia also scored in the shuttles ending in fifth place with a time of 1:04.85 from a team of Damien Gatian a senior, Marsus Barnes a senior, Austin Beverlin a senior, and Renner a senior. They came away with fifth place ribbons and added two points for the Blue Eagles.
No local athletes scored in the dashes, but Magnolia picked up another point as Renner came in sixth in the open 800 meter run with a time of 2:08.78. Paden City’s Shane Anderson scored in the 110 meter high hurdles finishing in fourth place for four Wildcat points and earning a ribbon for his effort, he was in a photo finish with the top three runners.
In the 4×100, 4×200, and 4×400 no locals teams placed but Valley high school and Paden City were both just nipped for a sixth place at the finish line in the 4×200, with Valley ending seventh and Paden City ninth.
The High jump went to Haiden Huffman of James Monroe high school followed by Peyton Amos of Webster County, both who cleared the bar at 6-2.00. Paden City’s Shane Anderson took the third place spot with a jump of 5-10.00 to get the silver metal and give the Wildcats six more points. Also scoring in the high jump was Valley senior Isaiah Bassett with a ribbon earning fifth place jump of 5-08.00 and two Lumberjack points.
Tyler Consolidated got two points as sophomore Sage Landis earned a ribbon in the pole vault as he came in fifth overall with a vault of 11-06.00. Magnolia’s Austin Beverlin got off a leap of 19-07.50 to finished fifth in the long jump and add two more points for the Blue Eagles while grabbing a ribbon. Valley’s Triston Bates came in sixth in the long jump to earn a ribbon with a leap of 19-04.00 good for a point. Rounding out the scoring for the local teams was Tyler Consolidated’s Jaden Holmes who took sixth place in the shot put with a toss of 42-10.00 good for a Silver Knight point and a ribbon.
Doddridge County won the boys state track meet with 86 points. Ritchie County was second with 80 followed by St. Marys with 58, Wheeling Central with 55, Buffalo 39, Wahama 32, Wood County Christian 30, Gilmer Co. 18, James Monroe 18, Paden City 16, Webster Co. 16, Magnolia 15, Richwood 14, Greenbrier West 14, Paw Paw 10, Sherman 9, Moorefield 9, Williamstown 8, Trinity Christian 7, Charleston Catholic 4, Petersburg 4, Valley 3, Tyler Consolidated 3, Ravenswood 3, Clay Battelle 3, Pocahontas 2, Tygerts Valley 2.
Magnolia Girls Finish Fifth among Class A schools at State Track Meet
While no local teams claimed the gold in any event the Blue Eagles of Magnolia had much success as they received a third place effort from senior Jaci Rohde in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.16 good for six points and a bronze medal. St. Marys Erica Davis was the top finisher with a time of 12.71. In the 200 meter dash Davis also took first with a time of 25.79. Magnolia got a fourth place finish in the race from sophomore Jenna Blain with a time of 27.35 good for four points and an individual ribbon.
No local girls finished in the point system in the distance runs, however Hundred’s Rachel Snedden and Paden City freshman Lexi Mathis gave good showing.
Magnolia’s Jenna Blain came up big in the 300 meter hurdles with a second place finish as the sophomore ran a 47.74 for eight Blue Eagle points and a silver medal. Earning a point for the Wildcats in the 300 meter hurdles was Paden City senior Hallie McDonald who ran a 50.24 for sixth place and a ribbon.
Magnolia girls added another second place and eight points to their total in the 4×100 meter relay as they fell to Williamstown but took the silver with a time of 52.78 with a team of Kaylee Cline a junior, Bre Herrick a senior, Sienna McKeever a freshman, and Jaci Rohde a senior. In the 4×200 meter relay the Blue Eagles captured third place for bronze medals as they ran a 1:51.64 with the same team, giving Magnolia six more points. In the 4×400 meter relay Magnolia took fourth place with a time of 4:32.28 good for four points from a team of Shy Simmons a sophomore, Herrick, Cline, and Blain, just two seconds separated them from the second place team.
Paden City got a big second place finish in the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdles as they were edged out by a strong Tygerts Valley team. The Wildcats were neck and neck the whole race but got nipped at the finish line. For Paden City they earned silver medals with a time of 1:10.45 from a team of Jocelyn Sawinski a sophomore, Mady Still a sophomore, Brandis Dalrymple a senior and Hallie McDonald a senior. The team added eight points to the Wildcat total.
Tyler Consolidated got two points from Bella Garuccio as she ended in fifth place in the high jump with a jump of 5-00.00 to earn a ribbon. Jaci Rohde earned a point for Magnolia as she ended in a three way tie for fifth place in the pole vault with a vault of 8-00.00. Winter Higgins a sophomore from Valley high school finished the scoring for local girls as she took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-05.50 good for two points and a ribbon.
Williamstown won the state girls track meet with a total of 148 points to easily out distance second place Doddridge County who ended with 88. Ritchie County was next with 67, followed by St. Marys with 38, Magnolia 37, Tygerts Valley 31, South Harrison 20, Charleston Catholic 17, Trinity Christian 16, James Monroe 10, Paden City 11, Buffalo 9, Sherman 8, Wood County Christian 8, Union 7, Morefield 7, Madonna 7, Clay Battelle 5, Richwod 5, Calhoun 5, East Hardy 4, Petersburg 3, Valley 2, Tyler Consolidated 2, Greenbrier West 2, Tucker Co. 1, Gilmer Co. 1, and Wheeling Central 1.
