OVAC Wrestling: Silver Knights Claim Sixth Place
WHEELING – Out of 40 teams in the OVAC Ron Mauck Wrestling tournament held Jan.19-21, the undermanned Tyler Consolidated Silver Knights showed what they are made off as they placed 26th overall but finished sixth in their division.
“This is something to be very proud of, ” TCHS’ Coach Chad Snider said. “We have a small group compared to most teams, but we were able to place two wrestlers this weekend. Brandon Keys brought home a respectable eighth place in the 195-pound weith class division while heavyweight Cory Chipps got seventh in the 285 pound class.”
Keys and Chipps also picked up wins on Thursday and Friday to advance to Saturday’s finals. The Knights had other wrestlers who were able to get wins in Mike Doyle and River DiBell who got wins on Thursday. Wes Watson, the newest addition to the Knights team ,suffered a season ending injury in his second match. According to coach Snider ,Wes was one of those wrestlers he would have liked to have had a few more seasons with.
Speaking of Keys and Chipps, Snider said, “Those two boys have shown the ability to win against the best wrestlers. They need to have confidence and believe in themselves when you wrestle against opponents with so many achievments. But I was very proud of the boys.”
