Barker, Lemasters Compete At Marietta Icebreaker Track Meet
MARIETTA — Two TCHS track stars Nathan Barker and Jarrett Lemasters got their first taste of the upcoming track season when they competed Saturday at Marietta College High School Icebreaker meet.
“Both Boys did well for their first competition,” TCHS Track Coach Jill Lemasters said. “Competing early helps them to train for their upcoming outdoor season. They both improved on their times from last year at this time.”
Barker, a teen who once finished a cross country 5K minus a shoe, was able to conquer another hurdle or 20 when he ran the 55 meter highs – ran a 9.71 seconds.
“It was my first meet, but compared to last year it was slightly faster than my best time as a freshman,” he said. “I’m satisfied with my performance for the time of year and competition I had.”
Barker said his goal this upcoming track season is to claim a gold medal as State Meet Shuttle race.
During the “off” season, Barker has been keeping in shape with basketball and hurdling on the weekends if weather permits.
As to why Barker runs track, the teen said it is because he gains a feeling of accomplishment.
“I run track because of the feeling I get running over the hurdles as well as the accomplishments I have made and am striving to make in the future,” he said.
Lemasters cleared more than a few hurdles too so as to finish 55-meter race with a time of 9.16 seconds. He also cleared 55 meter sprint with a time of 7.33 seconds. He reached a height of 12 feet in the pole vault. Remember, this is the Silver Knight who finished in second place with a jump of 12-feet 6-inches at the state meet, so we’ll see more of him this season.
