Silver Knights Go to Battle Against Blue Eagles
NEW MARTINSVILLE — Visiting Tyler Consolidated fell to 0-3 on the season with a 71-57 loss at the hand of the Magnolia.
During the Dec. 13 game up the river where the Blue Eagles fly, Silver Knights’ Quintin Richmond won the opening tipoff and laid in one of his five rebound put-backs to get them on the board, while the Eagles Nick Priem put one in of his own to knot the game up at 2-2.
Richmond scored again and teammate Dylan Reynolds sank a three to give the visitors an early 7-2 lead. Leo Herrick hit three and added two quick baskets off a steal and rebound to give Magnolia their first lead of the game, at 9-7.
Roberts added two more from long range for the Knights, while Herrick tacked on three charity tosses and Brooks Parsons added a deuce to finish out the opening stanza with the Knights clinging to a 15-14 advantage after one period of play.
Parsons opened the second period with a nice turn-around jumper in the paint. Silver Knight Jace Reed sank one of two free throws and the score stood at game 16. Tyler’s Reynolds and Magnolia’s Williamson traded threes and the Knights Tyler Anderson hit for two.
Eagles’ point guard Jake Fruner made a nice underhanded lay-in and Herrick and Richmond both hit for two. Roberts and Williamson each sank back-to-back triples to knot the game at 26 late in the second period. Roberts then hit his sixth three of the half to give the visitors a 28-26 lead.
In the second half, Williamson made a conventional three point play to tie the game and Priem knocked down a jumper with an assist by Herrick to give the lead back to Magnolia at the six minute mark.
Reed and Herrick each knocked down a jumper, while Reed tallied one of two free throws. Magnolia scored the games next three baskets before Nate Lancaster stopped the bleeding with a deuce. Magnolia scored the next three baskets to take a 10 point lead but Richmond got a pair of baskets to draw the Knights to within six before Nick Priem scored to end the quarter with Magnolia on top 47-39.
The final period started with Priem dishing off to Herrick for a quick bucket. The Knights Richmond then got another basket but Herrick scored two straight and the Eagles had their largest lead of the night at 53-41. New Martinsville then outscored the Knights 18-16 to close out the fourth and gain their second straight win to go 2-0 on the season.
“It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win, and the guys did what they had to to get the victory,” MHS Head Coach Dave Tallman said. “Jake Fruner did a good job of limiting Roberts shooting from the out-side, while Priem did a nice job on the boards.”
Herrick led all scorers with a season-high 28 points, including one basket from well beyond the arch, while Williamson sank 17 markers that included a pair of long range bonus bombs. Parsons sank a quiet 11 markers, while Preim and Fruner each sank a trio of two-pointers. Marso Smith came off the bench to drain a triple to close out the scoring.
Roberts paced the Silver Knights with 18 points, including six early three pointers, while Richmond provided 16 markers to lead the Tyler Consolidated club.
