TCHS Gladiators Are Poised to Pin
NEW MARTINSVILLE — TCHS’ 2016 wrestling team will debut tonight in New Martinsville at the Magnolia gym in a quad match with River, Monroe Central and the host team.
The Silver Knights have been working hard with two-hour daily practices at the high achool gym. Coach Chad Snider says he is disappointed that the numbers are down, but he has some tough kids and expects them to learn quickly and become competitive on the mat.
“I was disappointed that one of our better wrestlers didn’t come out this year as he decided to play another sport,” Snider said. “However, we do have some quality kids returning and I expect they will get some big wins. What can I say about Brandon Keys; this is his fourth year with the program and he has lettered each year. Last year he won some big matches and nearly took the OVAC. He also made it to the state event,” said Coach Snider. “We also have a good one in heavy weight Cory Chipps who has lots of potential and will be a tough matchup for the opposition.”
Keys is the leader of this group and will help the younger kids who are new to the program.
“I enjoy this sport,” Keys said. “I look forward to it each year and feel I have become a better wrestler because of the hard work I put into it. Coach Snider is an excellent coach and has taught me a lot. I just finished playing football, so I feel like I’m already in great shape. My goals this year are to win the conference championships and to make it to state.”
Snider pointed out that although Keys is the only senior competing, this eight-man team has four juniors with experience and one sophomore along with the two freshman who have both wrestled in middle school. ‘We may not be big in numbers but we have a lot of heart and will battle each time we hit the mat.”
Wrestling begins tonight come out and support Tyler Consolidated you won’t be disappointed.
