Tyler Quarterback Griffin Phillips Is Athlete of the Week
For the week of Oct. 12, Tyler Consolidated’s sophomore quarterback Griffin Phillips has been named athlete of the week.
Phillips had an outstanding game on Friday night as he connected with Tyler Anderson on a 15-yard scoring strike and added the two-point conversion toss while also connecting on 4-6 passes for 45 yards and picking up 45 yards rushing on only three attempts. He was also a perfect 5-5 on extra point kicks. In his first year as a full-time starter Phillips has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills and the ability to move the football through the air or on the ground. He is a good decision maker and one of those rare athletes who come on early in their careers to provide excitement for three or four seasons. Look for big things from Griffin as you haven’t heard the last of him.
Special honorable mention goes out to several Knights football players this week.
Tyler Anderson had two big scores and a two-point conversion catch while playing just a little over one quarter. Jace Reed had a huge rushing night with 159 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown in two and a half quarter of play. Nathan Lancaster scored on a heads-up 35-yard fumble return. Hunter Forrester picked of a pass and returned it 35 yards for a score. Trent Smith caught two big 15-yard chain movers. Also earning honorable mention this week is Silver Knights’ volleyball player Abbie Fletcher and Paden City’s Aubrey Neff.
Honorable mention goes out to Gage Huffman, a freshman who came in in relief and burst up the middle for a 21-yard score with .30 left in the game and another freshman, Mark Rucker, who scored on a two-yard run. Wesley Watson deserves special honorable mention for two fumble recoveries and eight tackles. Paden City’s Aaron Heasley also gets a special nod for having 19-yard and 65-yard touchdown runs, plus a two-point conversion run.
