Tyler’s Madison West Seeking Another Varsity Letter
This week the spotlight is on Tyler Consolidated senior athlete Madison West.
She is a 5-foot 7-inch tall, three-year starter for the Silver Knights who will be looking for her fourth letter as she prepares for the upcoming season in volleyball.
Playing for a program that makes it to the state tournament on a regular basis can be a challenge, however, this athlete has met that challenge all through her high school days . West said her goal this year is to win the sectionals and regionals and get back to Charleston in volleyball.
Coach Tracy Summers is excited to have her back as a leader this year.
“Madison is a hard worker and very coachable. She has improved her speed and floor play. During the summer, she has improved her strength and is a much harder hitter,” he said. “As a freshman, she had the maturity level of a junior, so going into her senior year she should do well.”
West has also been a starter each year on Tyler’s softball team where she pitches and plays infield. She wants to become a better pitcher and has been working out at Infinity Fitness Center in Sistersville to improve her arm strength.
“I am looking forward to this year as I want to get back to the state and bring home the championship trophy,” she said. “We have a good group of girls coming back and I want to help the younger ones be better players.”
Coach Summers added, “Madison is one of those athletes you like to have around. She is experienced and a hard worker who leads by example. She doesn’t know what it means not to make it to state because she has been there every year of her career and seems determined not to let that happen (stay home) this year. We are expecting a lot out of her. She has showed up in great shape and will be one of our captains and will play a leadership role.”
West says she wants to enter college after graduation, possibly attend Marshall University, and become a physical therapist. She certainly can achieve that as she has been an honor student all through high school and carries a 4.4 GPA. Always with a big smile on her face, West has the personality to go onto great heights. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has been a Peoples Bank Banquet Award winner all through school. She is also a member of the Middlebourne United Methodist Church where she attends on a regular basis with her family.
As always, look for big things from Tyler Consolidated volleyball and if West has anything to do with it, prepare for another trip south to Charleston for some state tournament action. The competition will be tough this year because some new schools have dropped to the single-A ranks, but Summers and West both feel the Knights are ready for the challenge. With school days just a few weeks away and fall sports soon starting, keep your eyes open for some big things from this senior volleyball player.
