Local Wrestlers Aspire to Conquer at the Mats
Wood County Jr. Wrestling League is a Youth Wrestling League with teams participating from Ritchie (Team United), Roane, Vienna, Lubeck, Mineral Wells, Ravenswood, Ripley, Wirt and South Parkersburg.
Wood County Jr. Wrestling competes on Friday nights throughout the wrestling season, with teams competing in typical dual or tri-meet fashion to determine the wrestler seeding for the end of season tournament.
The league has 21 weight classes spanning weights from 38 lbs. to 125 lbs. and then HWT. The 53 annual end of season tournament was held on this past Saturday, Feb 13.
To qualify as a league wrestler at an individual weight, each wrestler must first compete and win the wrestle off on his respective team.
Local wrestlers from Tyler County won the league spot for Team United as follows: Kaden Huffman -53 lber, Kendall Huffman-80 lber, and Trenton Huffman-90 lber. Team United had 13 wrestlers competing in separate weight divisions. As a team, Team United placed 6th overall, sending 5 wrestlers all the way into the championship. Team United is coached by Joe Ginanni of Pennsboro, W.Va.
Kaden Huffman competed in league and finished the regular season with an 8-0 record, earning the 1 seed for the end of season tournament. Kaden continued in the championship tournament, pinning his way to the championship match. Kaden was defeated in and exciting match in the finals on points by Lars Cooper from Ripley, earning Kaden the runner up spot at 53 lbs. Kaden Huffman is also a former league champion at 47 lbs. in 2015. Kaden Huffman is the son of Shannon and Amanda Huffman of Shiloh, WV. Kaden is a fourth-grader at A.I. Boremen Elementary.
Kendall Huffman competed in league and finished the regular season with a 7-1 record, earning the No. 2 seed for the end of season tournament. Kendall continued in the championship tournament, pinning his opponent in the first round and winning 8-1 on points in the semi-finals to a tough Chase Richards from Wirt County. Kendall was defeated in the finals on points by Robert Shockey from Ravenswood, earning Kendall the runner up spot at 80 lbs. Kendall Huffman is the son of Shannon and Amanda Huffman of Shiloh, WV. Kendall is a fourth-grader at A.I. Boremen Elementary.
Trenton Huffman competed in league and finished the regular season with an 8-0 record, earning the No. 1 seed for the end of season tournament. Trenton continued in the championship tournament, pinning his way to the championship match. Trenton faced off with Jackson Dearth from Lubeck in the championship match. Trenton defeated the Lubeck wrestler 14-3 on points to earn the 90 lb. league championship title. Trenton Huffman is also a former runner up at league in the 85 lb. division in 2015. Trenton Huffman is the son of Shawnray and Maranda Huffman of Middlebourne, WV. Trenton is a fifth-grader at A.I. Boremen Elementary.
All three boys will continue to wrestle open tournaments throughout the tri-state for the rest of the season, and finish the season by competing in the 39th Annual West Virginia Junior States Wrestling Championships on March 5-6.
Other Team United wrestlers placing in the event were Tristan Ginanni (runner up 65 lbs.) of Richie County, and Adam Burnside (champion 95 lbs.) of Doddridge County.
