Volleyball teams keeping courts busy
High School volleyball season is in full swing with both local teams finding themselves pretty busy on the courts these days. Both Tyler Consolidated and Paden City are racking up wins while getting some valuable court experience which will bode well for each come post-season.
It was the rematch volleyball fans had been waiting for when the Tyler Consolidated Lady Knights hosted the Williamstown Lady Yellow Jackets on Sept. 13 at Tyler Consolidated. The last time the two teams did battle it was at the Civic Center in Charleston and the match, the state championships. The Lady Knights came away with a second place finish that day, but at home last week, the home team proved their mettle.
The Silver and Black took the win over the Jackets in three sets, 25-20, 25-14 and 25-19.
Senior Hilary Casteel led the Knights in points with 13 (three aces) and five digs. Sydney Reed scored 12 points (one ace), three digs, one block and 11 kills; Megan Carpenter added seven points (two aces), five blocks and 10 kills; Kerstyn Cline had seven points(one ace), six digs, and 32 assists; Brea Hartley had two digs; Carly Fletcher, six digs; Lilli Orr, two digs; Katelyn Gogan, three digs; Sydney Yoho, one block and three kills; and Bridget Matthews, two blocks and six kills.
In the junior varsity match, the young Lady Knights also got the win, 25-16 and 25-13. Lilli Orr scored eight points (three aces); Madison West, seven points (two aces); Bre Hartley, six points (two aces); Kylie Mrtin, six points (two aces); and Hannah Casteel, five points (two aces).
On Sept. 14 at the Parkersbug Catholic Tournament, the junior varsity Knights won their pool and then lost to Parkersbug South to go 3-1 on the day.
Leading the Consolidated team in scoring for all four matches was freshman Madison West who served an astounding 57 points, 21 aces. Also scoring for the Silver were Hannah Cstee, with 24 points (six aces); Martin, with 18 points (five aces); Macy Long, 13 points; Hartley, 12 points; and Courtney Hoder, with seven points.
Abbie Fletcher had 19 kills while Madison Kissner had 11 and West had seven. Orr had 13 digs and Long had 34 assists on the day.
The junior varsity record now stands at 6-1 on the season.
The Lady ‘Cats were 1-3 against Bishop Donahue Sept. 10, dropping two 25-18 and 25-16 and winning a third 25-13 in Bishop country. Megan Pierce paced the scoring with 15 markers that included two aces. She added four kills and a dig. Haley Hizer marked up 12 points with two aces, three digs, a block and six kills. Graeson Baker also had 12 points with two aces, four digs and a kill. Myah Charkawi led in the digging column with 19, while scoring eight points that included three from the service line and two kills.
Taylor Cosper and Cydney Blatt completed the Lady ‘Cat scoring with seven and five points, respectively, each with an ace. Cosper had two kills to go along with Blatt’s nine and each had three digs.
Also contributing to the Paden City win were Abbi Still, three digs; Dezirae Middleton, four digs and Kallie Arnett with three kills and four blocks.
Paden City won two sets against Madonna Sept. 10, 15-23 and 25-21, but fell in a third set, 25-22. Pierce was high scorer with 16 points. She also contributed 11 kills, two blocks and as many digs. Charkawi and Baker followed in the point stats with 12 markers and two aces each. Charkawi added a kill and 23 digs, while Baker had two kills and 10 digs. Hizer added 10 kills, four blocks a dig and 11 points.
Cosper and Blatt scored 10 points each, with Cosper’s including two aces, she also assisted 30 times, added a kill. Blatt had four digs and seven kills.
Madison Kelly had one dig; Still, three digs; Middleton four digs; and Arnett with four kills and as many blocks.
The Green and White went 2-1 with Wheeling Central, winning two sets 25-21, 25-11, 25-16, in Wheeling Sept. 11. Charkawi led the ‘Cat scoring with 16 points, two aces. She added 20 assists and a kill. Pierce scored 15 points with an ace asnd two kills, while Charkawi loaded 11 points that included two from the service line. She also had four digs and two kills. Hizer had eight points an ace, an assist and a block.
Blatt marked up six points, an ace and added six kills and a block. Freshmen Madison Kelly had one block and Middleton, a dig.
The following day, the Lady ‘Cats defeated Beallsville 25-12, 25-20 and 25-12 at Paden City. High scorer for the home team was Blatt with 16 points eight kills and two digs.
Pierce served an ace point to go along with 15 others, while adding eight kills and two blocks. Charkawi had four aces with her 14 points, six digs and a kill and Hizer’s 12 points. Hizer added two digs and six kills.
Cosper and Baker each turned in nine points, three aces. Cosper stepped up with 25 assists, two kills and a dig, while Baker had two kills, four assists, two blocks and a dig. Arnett made four kills and as many blocks, while Abbi Still produced two digs.
