Wrestling club holds practice

By Staff | Nov 10, 2010

The Triple Threat Tornadoes wrestling club will be holding their first wrestling practice on Nov. 15, starting at 6:30 p.m. Practice will be held at the Willison Family Center (old Sistersville Gym) in Sistersville. This first practice will be very informative for both parents and athletes and both are urged to attend.

The original date to start was Nov. 2. Practice was moved to Nov. 15 due to the Sistersville gymnasium floor in the process of receiving a spectacular facelift. The gym floor has been sanded down and buffed, and is now getting ready for a brand new fresh coat of paint in the next week. After the paint job is done it will be a few days before anyone can be on the floor surface.

The first year of the wrestling club brings a lot of excitement to the area. “We have had over twenty sign-ups so far with another ten expected to show up on the first day of practice,” said club director, Eric McKeever. “The current age of student athletes participating is 1-6 grade, but with the turn out that we have had, we will now accept any child that is in kindergarten up to sixth grade.”

Anyone wishing to sign their child up that has not already done so, can sign up at the first practice session. The cost is $45 for one child, $75 for two, or $100 for three or more children in the same household. A team T-shirt and team shorts will be provided by the club.

McKeever listed a few things parents need to know about the inaugural Triple Threat Wrestling Club season: Kids from all areas are welcome, not just the Sistersville area. “We have kids signed up from Paden City, Middlebourne and New Martinsville as well,”he said. “Practice will last at least an hour and no longer than an hour and a half. We are planning on having two practices a week.”

“We will be taking Thanksgiving week off and Christmas through New Years off. The coaching staff has set their goals this year and we want to make sure the kids learn the basics first before we enter into competition.”

“We do not plan on traveling to weekend tournaments in our first season. We do plan to have a few open mat nights where we will invite other wrestling teams from around the area to come in and scrimmage. And we are hoping to have a season ending tournament to attend, hosted by the Tyler Consolidated High School wrestling team, at Tyler Consolidated.”

“As for practice gear, shorts and a T-shirt are required and wrestling shoes. Knee pads and a head gear are optional.”
