Knights, ‘Cats end 2010 season

Tyler Consolidated and Paden City high school baseball teams wound up their regular season play last week and began Sectional play this week. The recap of last weeks game follow:

Silver Knights

The Knights took on Cameron at home on May 4 and played error free ball on their way to a 3-2 win over the Dragons in celebration of senior night.

The Knights scored three runs on six hits and left four men on base.

Senior Zack Minger pocketed the win as the Knight pitcher, walking one batter and striking out one.

Offensively for the Knights, senior Brody Northcraft doubled and hit two singles to collect one RBI; Brandon Grimes singled, Zachary Knowlton singled and Dalton Wells singled to get one RBI.

On May 6 the Knights went up against Gilmer County at Gilmer and came out just short of the win, 9-7. The Silver scored seven runs on seven hits, left eight men stranded and committed two errors in the game.

Though the Knights were quick to score a run int he first and second innings, the Titans turned up the heat in the third, plating three runs to take the lead. A six run rally by Gilmer in the fifth all but sealed the deal, and Red, White and Blue took the win.

Minger knocked a double and a single for the Knights; Wells hit two singles for three RBI’s; Blaise Rice, Grimes, Knowlton, and Northcraft each singled with Northcraft and Koty Martin getting credit for an RBI apiece.

The Silver Knights ended the 2010 regular season with an 11-16 record.

Consolidated began Sectional play on Monday in New Martinsville against the Blue Eagles of Magnolia and came out on the short end of the 10-0 score.

The Eagles scored three runs in the third inning and four in the fourth to take the dominant lead in the game and plated three more in the fifth to shut the Knights out. Consolidated had two hits in the game and committed four errors.

Minger took the loss as the pitcher for the Silver, striking out three Blue Eagle batters and walking three.

Offensively, Minger doubled and Martin singled.

The match-up between the two teams to determine the Sectional champion was to continue on Tuesday. The winner will be determined by the best of three.

Paden City

The Paden City Wildcats wrapped up their 2010 season by splitting a double header with Doddridge County at home on May 4.

In the first game, Doddridge outlasted the ‘Cats for the 8-7 win, scoring two runs apiece in the first and second innings and four in the fifth. The ‘Cats added six runs in the fourth inning in an exciting rally, but could only plate one runner in the sixth.

Senior Malakai Anderson took the loss as the Wildcat pitcher in the game, striking out 13 Bulldog batters and walking two.

At the plate, Anderson hit three singles for an RBI; Jared Stewart doubled for two RBI’s; Josh Bennett hit two singles to get credit for two RBI’s; Zach Yost and Taylor Still each singled for one RBI apiece; and Mitchell Stewart, Jay Billiter and Matt Barker each singled.

In game two, the ‘Cats came back with a vengeance, scoring a run in the first inning and two in the third to lead the game and finally taking the win, 3-1. The ‘Cats scored three runs on six hits and had one error.

Senior Josh Bennett got the win on the mound for the home team in five innings, striking out nine and walking three.

Offensively, Mitchell Stewart singled twice for one RBI; Jared Stewart single for an RBI; Bennett singled twice and Still singled.

The Wildcats ended their regular season at 11-11.

Sectional play will begin on May 13 with Paden City hosting Valley at 6 p.m. The rest of the Sectional will be played at Cameron on May 14 and 15.
