The Tyler Consolidated and Paden City track teams will be participating in the West Virginia State Track Championships in Charleston on Friday and Saturday with both teams having the times to bring home some hardware.

The Silver Knights boys finished in third place just one point behind second place Magnolia at the Regional’s on Thursday, May 11, at the Ritchie County High School track.

The Silver Knights lost some much needed points which would have given them the second place when Speedster Trent Shepherd re-injured his hamstring while winning the pre-liminaries in the 100 meter dash. He was unable to compete in the 100 or 200 but did comeback to qualify for the state meet as a member of the 4×100 second place team.

Tyler Anderson picked up the slack finishing second in the 100, third in the 200, plus his 4×100 and leaping 21-02.25 to head into the state meet with the best long jump in Class A. Anderson finished the 100 meter dash with a 11.43 good for eight Knights points, his 200 meter time of 23.15 for six points. His long jump added 10 points to the Knights total and qualifying in all four events.

Brandon Wise added a point to the Silver Knights total finishing sixth in the 800 meter run but fell short of qualifying for Charleston. In the 1600 meter run junior Gavin Corley ran a nice race finishing in 4:56.54 for two Silver Knights points and qualifying for the state with an at large time.

Nathan Barker

Picking up some big points for the Knights was Nathan Barker who finished third in the 110 meter hurdles with a 16.99 good for six markers and qualifying for state. Cameron Ramsey finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles with a 46.22 giving the Knights four points but not quite making the state event.

Tyler Consolidated’s 4×100 relay team made up of Jarrett Lemasters, Trent Shepherd, Mark Rucker and Tyler Anderson was edged out of first by St. Mary’s but still added eight points to their total with the second place 45.82 time. Shepherd who hurt his hamstring in the open 100 ran the second leg in the event at about 50 percent of his norm.

The 4×200 meter team failed to make the state but still ran a respectable fifth place 1:41.15 for two points. Making up the team was Hunter Wells, Zackary Placer, Cameron Ramsey and Nicholas Gorby. The Knights 4×400 team added a point with 3:57.53 with a team of Gorby, Brandon Bonar, Trey Keys and Brandon Wise..

Also qualifying for the state meet Friday is the Knights 4×800 relay team of Corley, Dan Miller, Joshua Frum and Keys. They finished sixth for a Knights point and an at large qualifying time.

Mark Rucker grabbed two Knights points in the high jump with a 5-04.00 but fell short of qualifying. The Silver Knights pole vaulters owned the event on Thursday as they captured the first and second place jumps with Lemasters winning with a 13:06.00 and Levi Morgan going 12-06.00 for eight points. The two Knights pole vaulters had the best vaults in the Class A regional’s heading into the state meet. The Knights have a legitimate chance at bringing home the title but they’ll have to be at their best and Shepherd will have to be healthy. The Silver Knights finished with 76 points on the night for the third place finish.

Paden City placed several runners as well with 300 meter hurdler Jake Pierce winning the race with a state best time of 40.69 and giving the Wildcats 10 points. Teammate Cade Myers was not far behind as he finished in third with a 45.22 good for six points. Both runners will be at the big meet in Charleston on Friday.

The Cats’ 4×100 relay team failed to make the state but added a point to the Wildcats total with a sixth place finished in a time of 50.32.The Cat’s team was made up Myers, Seth Bohrer, Landon Smith and Wesley Smith. The Wildcats’ Wesley Smith got a berth in the state meet with a fifth place finish in the 110 hurdle finals finishing in 18.02 good for two points.

The Wildcats 4×200 team made the grade and will be at the state by coming in fourth for four points in a time of 1:39.55. Myers, W. Smith, Bohrer, and Pierce made up the team.

Paden City’s 4×110 shuttle hurdle team made up of Myers, W. Smith, L. Smith and Pierce grabbed a close second place with a time of 1:05.08 to get eight points and head to Charleston. The Wildcats finished seventh with 31 points on the night while having one of the smallest teams in the meet.
