MIDDLEBOURNE – When the auctioneer’s voice went silent after the final bid, a grand total of $45,451 was raised last Thursday during Tyler Consolidated’s chapter of Future Farmers of America’s annual Ham, Bacon, Egg and Bread Sale.

Though the numbers are down from last year’s totals, some speculate that since 2016 was an election year, it could have affected the numbers.

There were a total of 73 hams, 72 bacons, 10 dozen eggs, 10 loaves of bread, 2 scholarship pieces, and seven resales for the scholarship fund.

The Grand Champion ham was exhibited by Mindy Wells and was sold to Ridge 2 River Realty at $45 a pound for a total of $1,080 while the Reserve ham was exhibited by Tyler West and it also sold for 45 dollars a pound to DAC Energy LLC for a grand total of 1,080.00.

Jace Glover did very well for himself as he exhibited both the Grand Champion and Reserve bacons.

Glover sold the Grand Champion bacon to Momentive and the Reserve bacon to Long Reach Credit Union.

Both bacons sold for 120 dollars a pound for a grand total of 960 dollars for the Grand Champion, which weighed 8 lbs. and 888 dollars for the Reserve, which weighed 7.4 lbs.

The Grand Champion eggs were presented by Alex Greathouse and were purchased by David Bowyer for 1,175.00 dollars while the Reserve eggs were exhibited by Draven Nichols and purchased by McDonalds for 850 dollars.

The Grand Champion bread was exhibited by Hali Fluharty and was purchased by Maple Lane Farms for 400 dollars. The reserve bread was presented by Ashley Fluharty and was purchased by Antero for 400 dollars.

The averages for the event have been tallied and the average price per pound of ham was 13.09 dollars. The average for a pound of bacon was 31.56 while the average for eggs came to 386 dollars per dozen. The average for a loaf of bread came to 241.36 a loaf.

The Tyler FFA scholarship ham sold for 700 dollars and the Tyler FFA scholarship bacon sold for 600 dollars. There were other resales of some items to put towards the scholarship fund adding up to 642.70 allowing the FFA scholarship program to raise a total of 1,934.00.

This is the 67th year for the auction and you could tell that the students have put in a great deal of time and effort in preparing for this event. Of course, none of it could be possible without the dedicated support of the community and generosity of the purchasers.

This was the first ham and bacon sale for new FFA adviser Annie Erwin and she did a fantastic job. The event ran very smoothly considering there were 167 items to be auctioned off. The students showed great poise and confidence when presenting their items. Congratulations to all of the students and thanks to the companies that purchased the available items in support of these kids.
