MIDDLEBOURNE – Although the Silver Knights lost 52-26 to undefeated St. Marys, it wasn’t without first putting some fear into the Blue Devils and letting them know that Knights’ football is playoff worthy as well.

St. Marys drew first blood on Friday night when Senior running back Jaiden Smith ripped through the Knights’ defense for a 25-yard touchdown run, the extra point kick was good and with 6:54 left in the first quarter it was 7-0 St Marys.

The Blue Devils stifled the potent Knights rushing attack all night long, but the Silver Knights still found ways to score. The Blue Devils put two more scores on the board and led 21-0 with only 55 seconds gone in the second quarter and it looked like a route was on. The Knights however had other ideas as they took over on their own 35. With two big pass plays from Griffin Phillips to Tyler Anderson covering 64 yards, they soon found themselves within scoring position from the four yard line. After three short run by Jace Reed and Anderson, Phillips hit Reed for two yards and a score, making it 21-6 with 6:58 to play before half.

The Blue Devils added another score with two minutes left to go up 27-6 – but with just 26.7 seconds left – Phillips connected with Anderson for 69 yards and a Knights score to pull to within 27-13 to head into the locker room.

The score fired Tyler Consolidated up and the momentum seemed to be in their favor. The Knights received the ball first in the second half and Anderson took the kickoff on the two-yard line and, with a good block from Brandon Keys, broke free and raced down field for 92 yards setting up a first and goal from the three-yard line. On a second and goal, Phillips ran a bootleg around the right end for the two yards and Knights scored making it 27-20 with only 1:15 off the clock.

Just when it looked like Tyler was making a run for an upset, St. Marys went back to its potent ground game and came up with two more scores and a field goal to forge ahead 44-20 with 8:30 left to play in the game. Both teams would add another score as Reed got his second touchdown of the game on a one yard run with 3:09 to play making the final 52-26.

For the Knights, Anderson led the team with with 138 yards on five receptions and a score while also gaining 108 return yards. Reed scored twice on runs of one yard and also on a two-yard reception. Phillips was 12-29 for 188 yards two touchdowns and two interceptions.

St. Marys led in first downs 20-7 and amassed 299 yards rushing on 43 attempts for five touchdowns. The Knights were held to negative seven yards rushing on 18 carries.

The Silver Knights will look to get a playoff win this week as they travel to Baker for a matchup with undefeated and top ranked East Hardy. As of this writing, it was unsure whether the game would be played on Friday or Saturday. The Knights, however, have the firepower to come back with a first round win. Lets go with East Hardy 21-20. Coach Ryan Walton will have his team ready as always and hopefully bring home the win.
