Betty Ruth Rush

As it is closing in on the beginning of scare season, October, this column deserves more than a quick glance. Remember, Mrs. Rush is in her 80s, but she still has more than enough spunk and fire to deal with that snake. Check out this column and more in this edition of the Tyler Star News.

Today is a beautiful, sunny, fall day.

It is hard to believe that Saturday is the first day of October. The days are a lot shorter, about 2 hours and 45 minutes shorter.

I loved the longer evenings when I could work out in my flower beds till 9:30. I got another flower bed almost redone.

The lilies and phlox had out grown the bed. I had to dig them all up and separate them into small bunches and replant them.

The bed now looks so nice. It would be great if a flower bed would stay clean and neat.

We got 1 and 9/10 inch of rain last week Weatherman is calling for 100 percent chance of rain for tomorrow [Monday].

We certainly need rain, about two days of steady rain.

Boy, did I get a scare this past week. It was 11 p.m. and I just started to get up out of my recliner when I saw a snake crawling across the floor in front of me.

I jump out of my chair and stepped right in the middle of that snakes back. Its head was trying to bite me and its tail flopping around my ankle.

I was scared to death. It was about twelve to fifteen inches long.

I had to rearrange my foot onto its head without it getting away and get my other foot on its tail. I couldn’t reach anything to be able to kill it.

I started screaming for Delbert. It scared him as he was in bed asleep. He jumped out of bed thinking I was sick or something.

He grabbed my arm and told me to sit down. He kept telling me to sit down and I kept telling him I couldn’t; that I was standing on a snake.

I finally got him to understand that I couldn’t move because I was standing on a snake.

I told him to get a hammer to kill it with. It was hard to kill it on the carpet.

My adrenaline was running so high that I could not get settled down until 5 a.m.

I am terrified of snakes and spiders.

Thank the Lord, I had worked at Barths that day and still had my shoes on or that snake would of got away to who knows where as I go barefoot about all the time.

Honestly, there is never a dull moment out here on the farm.
