Teams finish regular seasons

The last week of the regular season for local boys high school basketball team is upon us, with both Tyler Consolidated and Paden City getting in their last few games before Sectional tournaments begin. Both teams have found themselves busy for the past couple of weeks, adding both wins and losses to their seasons records.

Silver Knights

The Tyler Consolidated Knights took on Doddridge at home on Feb. 13, and sent the Bulldogs home with the 75-53 loss. The Knights led by 39-25 at the half and though Doddridge made a valiant effort to come back, the Silver wrapped up the win.

Junior Dylan Romine led the Knights in scoring with 21 points in the game. He had one rebound, one steal and one assist. Dylan Reynolds added 16 points, had six rebounds, 13 assists and stole the ball four times; Scott Sole scored 12 points, had one rebound, one assist and three steals; Darren Heintzman, eight points, nine rebounds, one assist; Drew Casey, five points, four rebounds; Tim Edwards, four points, seven rebounds; Cole Kocher, four points, five rebounds, two assists; Randall Eastham, three points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots; and Blake Carpenter scored two points, had one rebound and one steal.

On Feb. 14 the Knights played at Braxton County, taking their second straight win in the week, 53-47. The two teams played a bang-up first half, going basket for basket, but the Knights prevailed in the second half, taking the win.

Romine led the way for the Silver and Black with 16 points, three rebounds, two assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Reynolds added 12 points, had four rebounds, two assists, two steals; Heintzman chipped in 12 points, had four rebounds, one assist and one steal; Sole, six points, three rebounds; Eastham, five points, one steal, one block; Edwards, four points; Kocher, two points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

On Monday, the Knights hosted Hundred at Tyler Consolidated, celebrating both the win, 83-56, as well as the four seniors on the team in senior night ceremonies immediately preceding the game.

Senior Darren Heintzman stepped up to the plate to gain high scoring honors for the home team, putting 26 points on the scoreboard for the Silver in the last home game of his high school career. Romine added 21 points against the Hornets; Reynolds had nine; Kocher, seven; Sole, six; Edwards, six; Casey, six; and Eastham, two.

Tyler Consolidated will begin Sectional play-offs this weekend at Doddridge. The Silver will face-off with the Paden City Wildcats on Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m.. The winner of the game will go on to play in the semi-finals.

Wildcats

The Paden City Wildcats played host to the Beallsville Blue Devils at home on Feb. 15.

Though the Wildcats led the game 12-10 after the first period of play, the Blue Devils came back fast and furious in the second to take a 22-18 lead at the half at Bob Burton Gymnasium. Paden City stepped up the play in the third, taking back the lead, but Beallsville outlasted them when it counted, in the last stanza, to eventually take the win.

Sophomores Kennedy Cain and Zach Heasley led the way in the scoring department for the Green and White with 19 and 17 points, respectively. Cain brought down six rebounds and had two steals while Heasley pulled in five rebounds and was credited with one assist and three steals.

Craig Allen, Drew Bidwell and Luke Cooper added three points apiece in the contest for the ‘Cats. Allen had four rebounds; Bidwell contributed two rebounds and had two assists; Cooper brought down two rebounds, had one assist and one steal; Brandon Cross had one rebound.

The ‘Cats traveled to Williamstown on Monday to take on the Yellow Jackets, but returned home with the 67-38 loss.

Playing head-to-head with the Maroon throughout the first half, the ‘Cats found themselves trailing by only two points at the break, 27-25. Sluggish third and fourth periods saw the Green and White fall behind on the scoreboard and unable to recoup.

Cain led all Wildcat scorers in the game with 12 points. Cooper totaled six points, had two rebounds and four assists; Heasley, five points, six rebounds, a blocked shot and one assist; Allen five points; Bidwell, five points, four rebounds; Cross, three points, five rebounds; and Logan Carroll scored two points.

The Wildcats stand with a season record of 11-9, before they head to Sectionals on Saturday against Tyler Consolidated at Doddridge County.
