Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
The Memorial Weekend has come and gone in our little community of Sistersville. I think everyone is a little tired, but we continue to bask in the warm feelings generated by all the successful activities sponsored by the collaborative efforts of so many organizations. It just goes to show what we can accomplish when we all work together.
The weekend began with SHS Chapel at the old high school gym and moved quickly to the president’s reception in the beautifully decorated ballroom of the Elks club. Saturday dawned bright and beautiful, paving the way for a great alumni parade. It was led by the award-winning TCHS Marching Band playing the old SHS fight song. I’ll be honest; I got teary eyed hearing them as they came marching down State Route 2. Behind them and acting as Honorary Grand Marshals where the Regional Champion TCHS boys baseball team headed to Charleston this week to compete for the state title. Then we had such a strong showing from Riverfront Athletics and their youth sport teams, I began to worry there wouldn’t be any children along the parade route to gather up the candy because they were all in the parade. Next began the Cabaret Extravaganza of decorated floats from TCHS and SHS anniversary years. It was a difficult job for the judges trying to select the winners. Saturday evening concluded with the traditional banquet and dance.
Other community serving organizations and churches sponsored fundraising breakfasts, bounce houses and water stations. The ferry boat was busy giving free rides to all patrons throughout the weekend along with the first cruise of the summer season.
On Monday we gathered at Veterans Memorial park to pay to tribute to those men and women that gave their lives for our country in service so we may continue to enjoy the freedoms and way of life to which we are accustomed. I probably missed someone on this list, but my intent is to say thank you to everyone that helped make this alumni Memorial Day weekend one for the memory books. When we work together for the good of all, there is nothing we can’t accomplish!
Until next year.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Rutherford, 1st Vice President SHS Alumni 2023
