Love Your Mothers
“Because I feel that, in the Heavens above / The angels, whispering to one another, / Can find, among their burning terms of love / None so devotional as that of “Mother”- Edgar Allen Poe
It is our hope that Mother’s Day 2022 will bring great joy to our readers about how moms have made and continue to make the world a better place. That, after all, was the original intent of the founders of what was designated a national holiday in 1914.
“The signing was not that important to President Woodrow Wilson in a political sense. But it would not have taken much persuasion for Wilson to sign it,” said Andrew Phillips, curator of the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library in Stanton, Va. “Strong women were greatly influential in his life, including his mother, his first wife, and his three daughters.” Ellen Wilson, the President’s first wife, died three months after the proclamation.
Many also cite Anna Jarvis, a Grafton, W. Va. housewife who began the push for the holiday to honor her own mother, who died in 1905. As early as 1868, the elder Jarvis established a local committee for a “Mother’s Friendship Day” to heal wounds in families broken by the Civil War. Prior to that, she had also organized “Mother’s Day Work Clubs’ to ease the suffering of ill and wounded Civil War troops.
An old Jewish saying: “God couldn’t be everywhere, so He made mothers.” This saying couldn’t be more true. A mother is always there. When you are young, you are completely depending on your mother. She feeds you, takes care of you, she baths you, makes sure you are warm enough, and she hugs you. She is there for a hundred of reasons.
She cooks for you, washes your clothes, helps with your homework, tucks you in at night and does her best to teach you right from wrong. That’s just what good Mothers do. But it’s not all! They teach you about love, kindness, caring, helping, working, and they watch over you. One of the great gifts they give is the importance of making and keeping friends. The world is a lonely place if you are friendless!
A great Mother opens up her home to your friends and encourages you to invite them home. She treats them well and offers them food. She makes them feel special in your home. A great mother is one you can tell all your problems to and she will listen and give good advice. She’s someone you can go to at anytime for help and support. She wants the best for you no matter the costs. She will be there in happy times and sad times. Great mothers are sweet, funny, caring, clever, beautiful, creative and friendly. To every person they will be friendly.
Without a mother’s love, each of us would be a lesser person, a paler reflection of our current self. If you’re lucky enough to have a mother who is still living, take a moment to thank her for everything she has done for you. Take the time to thank her and to let her know how much you appreciate her love, sacrifice and support. And most importantly tell her face to face if possible, that you love her! That is the one thing they want more than any gift you can give, they want your love in return for the love they gave you.
