What To Do If You Get Anxiety!

By Staff | Apr 21, 2021

Just remember anxiety is a perfectly normal and a natural part of being a human. There will always be times when you’re nervous or worried. It happens to everyone, some can handle it even when it turns into something that never goes away, others can’t. What causes anxiety and what do you do when it takes hold?

I worked in the coal industry for 28 years. If there was ever a job with anxiety, coal mining was it. It was especially tough in the 1970’s and 80’s when the UMWA and coal companies were battling it out. I believe I developed immunity to anxiety during those days. When I came to work for the Newspaper I was amazed at how uneasy everyone seemed, always on edge. Everything was hurry, hurry! They all seemed to be stressed out. I watched as one after another would get uptight and quit. One editor quit because she was afraid of having a stroke! Two more couldn’t take the hours and soon quit. Another often broke down and cried. I mean I know they loved their jobs, I just can’t understand all the tension.

I thought what is wrong with these people! Well it soon became my turn. Due to my age and inexperience I must admit I had my doubts. However, what I had on my side was immunity, and that makes a huge difference. Ask anyone who has been vaccinated, when you’ve been vaccinated you have a piece of mine. See, not much excites me, stresses me, or gives me anxiety. I kind of thrive on pressure. If you’ve ever worked in industry, you would know the feeling. Not only did you have to meet deadlines, there were also the unmistakeable safety precautions that had to be adhered to. The calling into to the office for the smallest of mistakes was the worst. However what you learned from your mistakes and the price you paid for them, taught you a lesson on behavior.

I enjoy confrontation. Not many people can say that, but what ever is eating at you will always keep eating at you unless you get it off your chest. And sometimes you have to let people know where you stand. That’s part of life, whether it’s at work, home or at play. What I don’t like are those who talk behind others backs and not to their face.

I can tell you now if you can’t take being corrected for making mistakes you will always have a problem. I was a laborer and safety man for over 30 years. I made many mistakes and helped many others eliminate mistakes they were making. I also helped people learn to live with their mistakes by letting them know you can’t please everyone all the time.

Some people seem to suffer from some anxiety-related disorder that has gone undiagnosed.

Anxiety is part of our world, the same way stress, and sadness are, so the key is understanding how to cope with it. It’s not something that goes away easy. some people pretend not to be bothered, but that is their worst mistake. When anxiety strikes the best thing you can do is deal with it or ignore it. I prefer to ignore it if at all possible.

The feeling of anxiety is part of your body’s stress response and I know it has to be released on occassion. There are a number of psychological theories as to why anxiety exists. But, I believe it exists in most people because they let it! Although one can’t always avoid anxiety, there are many ways to deal with it. . Many times the best way is to confront the problem head on with the proper attitude.

Some people have suffered from stress and anxiety for so long that they don’t even recognize it as an issue. You can usually identify nervous, anxious, or stressful people. They are the ones who worry way to much and lay blame on others. I believe one of the best medicines for anxiety is hard work, loyalty, and the desire to perform whatever you do to the best of your ability. Try doing that if you have anxiety! Communicate well with your co-workers and don’t pay much attention to people who try to put you down. I guarantee you will feel better once you understand there are certain things you can’t change or do anything about.

One last thing, a little humor and fun can sometimes be the answer to a lot of your problems. Be kind, courteous, understanding, and fair. Don’t be afraid to stand for what is right, and be willing to admit it when you’re wrong.
