Spring Cleaning Is Needed in West Virginia
The unmatched beauty of the West Virginia hills begins to emerge this month as the trees begin to leaf and blossoms appear on the hillsides.
The emerging beauty is marred, however, by the accumulation of litter that is evident on nearly every roadway in the county. The small amount of snow this winter has kept unmasked what in most years is covered in white. By summer it may be covered again in some places, but in springtime this product of one of man’s most obnoxious habits is laid bare.
If the problem is to be corrected, now is the time to do it.
A recent drive through Wetzel and Tyler county left much to be desired. The main arteries of the counties are littered from the roadways to the streams. A drive from Bens Run to Proctor along Rt.2, puts one in a grave state of depression. The work needs to begin and soon, the state, counties and communities need to all pitch in with a cleanup campaign. Many volunteer groups stand by ready to help, Women’s clubs, garden clubs, schools, scout troops, 4-H groups, veterans organizations and senior citizens groups could all be asked to participate.
It will work if the people of the state will enter into the spirit of the effort. It is not necessary to belong to an organization to take part. Each person can help. A county by county effort is all that is needed, along with a little organization.
Clean-up weeks are already planned in New Martinsville, they begin in May and run through October. Dumpsters will be located at the Hydro and city workers will be available to help unload for those needing help. If everyone does their part it becomes much easier. The beauty of our state begins at home. We watched the other day as a driver unloaded trash from his pickup bed before driving through the car wash. A clean truck, but a dirty ground.
It’s a time worn plea, but it never loses it’s truth. If everyone helps, the city, county and state can sparkle. Clean up around your home this week and next. Cleanup around your neighborhood, too.
West Virginia will have a lot of visitors this year. Let’s get the spring cleaning done in a proper way before they arrive.
