Consider Adding Art To Elementary Schools

By Staff | Apr 3, 2019

Joyce Hagerty brought an interesting topic to the Tyler County Board of Education at its March 18 meeting. According to Hagerty, it has been 30 years since there was an art teacher in the elementary schools. During later discussion at the meeting, it was said the board could never seriously consider bringing art back into elementary schools due to financial reasons.

However, we hope the board reconsiders this at some point, because Ms. Hagerty brought forth some very valid reasoning.

While technology is constantly advancing, and should be a prominent part of a student’s education, we hope there is always room to pursue other interests besides what is displayed on a computer screen. We know the elementary schools do this with their music programs, and we’ve seen how the music programs appear to help build a solid foundation for such programs at the middle school and high school levels.

Having the opportunity to regularly study art and work on art projects, we believe, would offer the chance for students to really dabble into the world of art more than what an occasional project can would offer. We would be interested in what this could give the students for their future art pursuits at the middle and high school levels.
