A Hero’s Final Respects
Our hearts are broken as we think of the late Mr. Leroy McElrath – a United States veteran, an American hero. He was living in a shed, no running water and no heat… He was left unnoticed until it was too late.
How does this happen? McElrath served his country, willing to give all for his country and her people. Yet he was left alone, without even the very basic essentials.
The loss of Mr. McElrath’s life is tragic. The fact he was seemingly forgotten about is absolutely tragic and rather enraging.
However, we must say we are grateful to live in a community whose people stepped forward and took quick, and proper, action. From county law enforcement – who first responded to the call regarding a deceased man, to the Valley High School Sportsman’s Club – which ensured McElrath had replacement dog tags, each party involved deserves a sincere “Thank You.” So many organizations and community members stepped in and assisted in their own unique ways. Though we cannot imagine the trials he lived, the folks in our community ensured an American hero received a proper and respectful fairwell.
