Dilapidated Buildings and How to Address Them
There was a meeting held recently to discuss the demolition of unsightly and unsafe buildings. This seems to be a common problem with Middlebourne, Sistersville and Paden City. Most residents want to see their towns revived to a state of being easy on the eyes, but most resident don’t quite realize the money, labor, and paperwork that is required for such a project. Money that most of these small town don’t have. The West Virginia Property Rescue Initiative met with several representatives to discuss this problem. They discussed potential solutions to the matter and offered substantial loans with low interest rates to give support to these communities. The group was well received, but there were still many questions left after the meeting. How to pay back loans? How to resolve absentee landlord issues? How to get the community more involved in taking ownership of their respected towns? All of these questions and more still remain. Although this is not a problem that will be fixed over night, it is nice to see people coming together to offer solutions and get the ball rolling in the right direction. Perhaps with enough volunteers and outside financial support, we may just restore these towns once again.
